Stanford Takes on the Western Regionals

Feb. 21, 2006

With Western Regionals on the horizon, the Stanford Fencing Team is poised to make a strong presence in foil, epee, and sabre. On March 4th, the Stanford Cardinal will go up against UC-San Diego, CalTech, CSU-Fullerton, and the US Air Force Academy. The winnings here will provide the next step on the road to nationals, to be held in Houston, Texas from March 16-18.

Several fencers will be put to the test as they engage their competition with precision and finesse. For senior Martin Lee, the event marks a critical opportunity to qualify for the All-American Award, granted to those fencers who score above the very best in the nation. Lee's track record includes a strong win in the last round of competition against Michigan, UNC, and Notre Dame.

In foil, Steve Gerberman eyes this coming round as only a stepping stone to his larger goal at hand, one more All-American Award to cap off his last year at Stanford. Gerberman has acted as the squad's offensive plan, especially against the toughest line of competition. When asked about the coming match, Gerberman only spoke of his passion for fencing, and love of the team.

The Women's squad has also a shown a leading record in the Western region. For the Sabre and Epee squads, the event provides a chance to remind the nation that Stanford is here to win, one point at a time.
