Stanford in Second Place at NCAA Fencing Championships
SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- Stanford University stands in second place after the first of four days at the NCAA men's women's and fencing championships at the Angela Athletic Facility in Notre Dame, Indiana.
The Cardinal has 42 points, and is just two points behind host Notre Dame's 44. Penn State (34), Yale (31) and Columbia/Barnard (28) round out the top five.
The women fenced five of eight rounds on Thursday witrh rounds 6-8 and the championship bouts to conclude on Friday. Men's sabre will fence rounds 1-5 on Friday and conclude on Saturday. Men's epee and foil will be contested Saturday and Sunday.
The championship consists of 120 fencers in five weapons with teams receiving one point for each win in the 24 fencer round-robin competition in each weapon. The top four fencers in each weapon advance to the championship semifinal and final where the winner in each weapon will be determined. Wins in this portion of the competition do not count toward team standings.
Stanford is led in women's foil competition by Felicia Zimmerman and Monique de Bruin, who both have 12-2 records. Zimmerman currently stands in second place, and de Bruin in fourth.
In the women's epee, the Cardinal's Jessica Lisagor is in third place with an 11-3 mark, while Nelia Mann is 11th at 7-7.
