Stanford, Calif. -
Stanford University and Windermere Real Estate today released the racing schedule for the third annual Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic - promising to be the largest rowing regatta of its kind on the West Coast. Held at Redwood Shores in Redwood City, California, this invitational rowing regatta and community festival takes place on Saturday, April 9 from 9am to 6:30pm, and Sunday, April 10 from 9am to 5:30pm. The weekend event will feature more than 130 races between the nation's top universities, local rowing clubs, and high school teams.
With competing teams from 18 colleges and more than a dozen Bay Area clubs and highs schools, the third annual Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic is expected to draw record crowds as spectators line the banks of Redwood Shores to watch the races and enjoy the free community event. Food, beverage and activities will be available to the thousands of rowing enthusiasts and community supporters who gather for the regatta.
"This year's Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic will feature the most robust line-up of collegiate and community rowing I have ever seen in one single regatta," said Craig Amerkhanian, Stanford director of rowing and head men's coach. "Spectators will have the unique chance to witness fierce competition between some of the best athletes in the nation - all while enjoying the festive atmosphere that this regatta is known for."
In addition to Stanford University, visiting teams include California, Clemson, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Michigan, Oregon State, Princeton, Sacramento State, San Diego State, Sonoma State, Saint Mary's, Texas, UC Davis, UCLA, Washington, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Yale. Athletes will compete in two days of Henley style racing, a one-on-one or a two-boat race used for competition at the famous Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England.
The Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic also includes racing between more than a dozen community and high school teams from across the region, including Marin Rowing Club, Pacific Rowing Club, Capital Crew, St. Ignatius High School, Newport Aquatic Center, Los Gatos Rowing Club, Kent Mitchell Rowing Club, Humboldt Rowing Club, Peninsula Aquatic Center Junior Crew, Stanford Rowing Center and North Bay Rowing Club.
"Windermere Real Estate is honored to be the title sponsor of this regatta and we look forward to once again hosting these outstanding athletes and their countless local fans," said Don Riley, president of Windermere Real Estate in Northern California. "Now in its third year, the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic provides a unique opportunity for us to give back to these Bay Area neighbors while maintaining our support for the oldest inter-collegiate sport in the nation."
Windermere's heritage of supporting collegiate crew racing began 19 years ago when the company sponsored the first annual Windermere Cup regatta in Seattle. Held in partnership with the University of Washington, the Windermere Cup has become one of the largest community events in Seattle, welcoming national and international crew teams for exciting competition while commencing the official opening day of boating season for the waters of the Puget Sound. In 2003, Windermere expanded its involvement with the sport and launched, in conjunction with Stanford University, the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic at Redwood Shores.
