Stanford Announces Third Annual Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic
Feb. 23, 2005 Stanford, Calif. - Stanford University, in partnership with Windermere Real Estate, today announced the line-up of teams for the third-annual Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic, an invitational rowing regatta held at Redwood Shores, in Redwood City, California. This two-day regatta and free community festival takes place on Saturday, April 9 from 9am to 5:30pm, and Sunday, April 10 from 9am to 4:30pm. The regatta features crew races between 17 of the nation's top universities as well as nearly 400 Bay Area community and high school rowers. Drawing hundreds of athletes and thousands of spectators each year, the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic has become one of the most anticipated rowing events on the West Coast. In addition to Stanford University, visiting teams include the University of California, Clemson, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Michigan State, Oregon State, Princeton, Sacramento State, San Diego State, Texas State, UC Davis, UCLA, University of Washington, University of Virginia, University of Wisconsin, and Yale. Athletes will compete in two days of Henley style racing, a one-on-one or a two-boat race used for competition at the famous Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England. "The Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic is a unique event - bringing together athletes from across the nation as well as thousands of local spectators who come to witness this inspiring display of competition," said Craig Amerkhanian, Stanford director of rowing and head men's coach. "We're thankful to Windermere Real Estate for its continued support of this event and we're looking forward to an even larger regatta this April." The Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic also includes competition between more than a dozen community and high school teams from across the region, including Marin Rowing Club, Pacific Rowing Club, Capital Crew, St. Ignatius High School, Newport Aquatic Center, Los Gatos Rowing Club, Kent Mitchell Rowing Club, Humboldt Rowing Club, Peninsula Aquatic Center Junior Crew, Stanford Rowing Center and North Bay Rowing Club. "Windermere Real Estate is honored to be the title sponsors of this regatta for the third consecutive year," said Don Riley, president of Windermere Real Estate in Northern California. "The event offers a rare opportunity for our agents to interact with top collegiate rowers from around the country while celebrating alongside countless people from the neighborhoods we serve." Windermere's heritage of supporting collegiate crew racing began 19 years ago when the company sponsored the first annual Windermere Cup regatta in Seattle. Held in partnership with the University of Washington, the Windermere Cup has become one of the largest community events in Seattle, welcoming national and international crew teams for exciting competition while commencing the official opening day of boating season for the waters of the Puget Sound. In 2003, Windermere expanded it's involvement with the sport and launched, in conjunction with Stanford University, the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic at Redwood Shores.
