Stanford won its second national championship with the largest margin of victory in a national-title game up to that point: Stanford 78, Western Kentucky 62, in Los Angeles. Stanford's Molly Goodenbour was named the MVP of both the West Regional and the Final Four and teammate Val Whiting averaged 18.5 points and 9.1 rebounds on the way to earning Pac-10 Player of the Year honors and a spot on the Kodak/WBCA All-America first team.

Stanford's high-scoring team won its first NCAA title, beating Auburn, 88-81, in the final played in Knoxville, Tenn. Stanford first great player, Jennifer Azzi, took home the Wade Trophy, Naismith Award, Honda-Broderick Award, Pac-10 Player of the Year, and the Final Four MVP. The Cardinal won its first 20 games during a 32-1 season, and went on to average 92 points per game. The Cardinal reached 100 points 10 times during the team and scored an NCAA regional-record 114 against Arkansas to advance to the Final Four.
