| Sonja Henning’s Stanford career began on the right note as she was named the Women’s Basketball News Service Collegiate Freshman Player of the year in 1988. She went on to be a key part of Stanford’s first national championship-winning team in 1990, starting all 33 games and leading the team with 221 assists in addition to scoring 8.8 points per game. As a senior in 1990-91, Henning was named to the Kodak All-America Team and the NCAA Women’s All-Final Four selection while leading the Cardinal to a second straight Final Four appearance. In her four-year Stanford career, Henning was named to the All-Pac-10 Team three consecutive years (1989-91), led Stanford to a four-year record of 113-15 and helped the Cardinal to its first NCAA Championship in 1990. Henning, following her junior year on The Farm, was a member of the USA Basketball Goodwill Games and FIBA World Championship Teams in 1990, winning gold with each team, and was part of the USA Basketball Pan-American Games Team bronze medal-winning team in 1991. Domestically, Henning played professionally for the ABL’s San Jose Lasers (1996-98) and Portland Power (1998) before moving on to the WNBA, where she played for four teams, the Houston Comets (1999, 2002), Seattle Storm (2000-02), Washington Mystics (2003) and Indiana Fever (2003). | |||||||||
