Steve Dunning was the first national player of the year for the Cardinal, producing one of the greatest seasons on the mound in school history. In his final season, he compiled a 13-2 record, a 1.83 ERA and 144 strikeouts over 18 appearances and 108 innings. The year prior, in 1969, he was 4-4 with a 2.40 ERA with 70 strikeouts. The second overall pick, Dunning was the second player ever to play in the Majors without first playing a game in the minors, doing so with the Indians in 1970. He would spend seven years in the Majors with five teams. Prior to the emergence of the designated hitter and inter-league play, he was the only American League pitcher from 1971 to 2008 to have hit a grand slam.
