A competitive sprinter during the 1960s, Stouder won three golds and one silver at the 1964 Summer Olympics at the age of 15. She was the second woman ever to swim under one minute, doing so in the 100-meter freestyle at the 1964 Olympics. She twice set the world record in the 200-meter butterfly, also in 1964. Stouder was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1972.
