| Continuing a long tradition of two-sport athletes dating back to Ernie Nevers, Merriman was a sweet-swinging left-handed outfielder and a great fullback. After serving in World War II, he came to The Farm to play baseball and football. He walked onto the Indian football team as a freshman in 1942 and in a United Press story in 1946 it stated Stanford's line was making room for the finest fullback in the West... he can do just about anything expected of a halfback He played one season of minor league ball and three seasons in the Majors before joining up to fly Panther Jets on more than 80 combat missions in Korea. He finished his Major League career after serving in Korea in 1955. Prior to his second military assignment he was drafted by the Chicago Bears, but declined to play for the legendary George Halas. | |||||||||||
