| The 6-foot-5 middle blocker and outside hitter from Marina del Rey, Calif., was a four-year starter at Stanford from 1983-86. He earned first-team AVCA All-America honors in 1986 and was second-team twice. Root played for the United States team that captured the gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. The three-time All-California Intercollegiate Volleyball Association first-team selection burst onto collegiate scene by leading the Cardinal in blocks at nearly five a game as a freshman. Root was an outstanding all-around player who led Stanford in kills, digs, and blocks during his career. He remains among Stanford’s all-time leaders in kills (1,405) and digs (643). | |||||||||||
