Stanford's first Cy Young Award winner in 1967 with the Red Sox, the right-hander first made waves in 1962 and 1963, setting the school-record with 114 strikeouts in 109.1 innings in 1963. In two seasons with the Stanford pitching staff he struck out 211 in 203.0 innings. The right-hander's best season came in 1967 when he went 22-9 and led the Red Sox to the American League pennant. That All Star season also saw him toss a one-hitter over the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.
