| Stanford's coach for a majority of the 1980s, never finished lower than third at the NCAA Championships, winning the Cardinal's first NCAA title (and second national title) in 1982. Three times his teams were national runners-up, his first season in 1982, as well as in 1984 and 1987. The 1984 Olympics was Haines seventh-straight Olympics on a coaching staff, starting in 1960. After moving from Indiana, he built the Santa Clara Swim Club, which produced 23 Olympians. A bronze statue of Haines stands next to the Olympic-size pool at the Santa Clara Swim Center in his honor. He passed away in 2004 at the age of 82. | |||||||||||
