One of the most accurate passers in Stanford history, Guy Benjamin won the starting quarterback role in 1976 and led Stanford to a 9-3 mark in 1977, including a 24-14 Sun Bowl victory over LSU. The Offensive MVP of that game, he went 23-for-36 for 269 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Benjamin was selected a first team All-American in 1977, led the NCAA in passing and was named Co-Pac-10 Player of the Year (with Warren Moon). He was also awarded the 1977 Pop Warner Trophy honoring the Top Senior Football Player on the West Coast, the Wiseman Trophy (awarded to the nation’s outstanding football player) and the W.J. Voit Memorial Trophy (awarded to the outstanding college football player on the Pacific Coast). Benjamin finished his Stanford career with 5946 passing yards, 45 touchdowns and a .604 completion percentage, which ranks him among the school’s all-time best in all three categories. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 1978 NFL Draft and spent six seasons with the Dolphins, New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers.
