A gifted athlete with the ability to roll out of the pocket and make accurate throws, Don Bunce played behind Jim Plunkett on The Farm until 1971 when he became the starter. In 1971, he led Stanford to the Pac-8 Championship earning all-conference honors. His clutch performance in the 1972 Rose Bowl when he completed five of six passes on last minute drive set up a game-winning field goal against Michigan and was named the Most Valuable Player of game. He was awarded the 1971 W.J. Voit Memorial Trophy as the most outstanding college football player on the Pacific Coast. Bunce was drafted in the twelfth round of the 1972 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins and played one season in the Canadian Football League before returning to Stanford to attend medical school. He served as Stanford’s team doctor from 1982-1992.
