One of Indians' best power hitters, the Sultan of Sunken hit eight home runs out of the friendly confines in 1952, twice as many as any of his competitors in the previous three years. Keep in mind it was 360 to the corners and 500 free to center. He was the team's captain during the College World Series run in 1953. The Indian left fielder finished his career on fire, hitting five out of Sunken Diamond in 1953, and 13 in his career, easily the most of any player to that point. One epic shot, hit onto what is now Harry Maloney Field, was estimated to have traveled 595 feet. (From 1931 to 1965 a total of 59 home runs were hit out of Sunken Diamond). A two-sport athlete for the Indians, he not only played in the Rose Bowl (1952) and College World Series (1953), but also the World Series with the Dodgers (1959). He finished off his Major League career in 1963.
