STANFORD, Calif. -
Senior Christen Press (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Chadwick School) of the No. 1 Stanford women’s soccer team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of November 15-21.
Press scored two goals to lead Stanford to a 3-0 victory over UCLA in an NCAA third-round match in the rain on Friday night at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
Press scored her first goal, in the 29th minute, after taking a pass from Camille Levin, turning, and cutting left and then right to evade defenders and open up enough space to unleash well-placed shot from the top of the box. She scored again in the 60th minute with a hard shot to give Stanford a three-goal lead.
Press now is one goal away from matching Kelley O’Hara’s year-old school single-season record of 26. Press also leads the nation in goals and points (57).
This is Press’ third Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor and the second for the women’s soccer team in the 2010 season. Press and the Cardinal are 22-0-1 going into their NCAA quarterfinal match Friday night against Florida State at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium for the right to advance to the College Cup.
Also nominated: Bobby Bollier (Men’s Swimming), Maya DiRado (Women’s Swimming), Nick Dugdale (Sailing), Jeremy Green (Men’s Basketball), Andrew Luck (Football), Ryan Mango (Wrestling), Jeanette Pohlen (Women’s Basketball).
