The Farm Report: Taylor Keeps Streak Alive

Nov. 3, 2010

STANFORD, Calif. -

This week's live Stanford TV, radio and webcast schedule listed below.

Cross country
After sweeping the Pac-10 Championships, both Stanford teams made moves in the national rankings. The women are up to No. 4 after winning its first Pac-10 title since 2007. The surprise was that the men dropped to No. 2 nationally despite winning the Pac-10 title over No. 3 Oregon in convincing fashion. The Cardinal dropped below the new No. 1, Oklahoma State, which had a 1-2-3-4 finish at the Big 12 Championships. The Cowboys are the defending national champions and received seven first-place votes to five for the Cardinal. Men's Ranking: No. 2 (USTFCCCA). Women's Ranking: No. 4 (USTFCCCA).

Field Hockey
With the regular season complete, Stanford will attempt to capture its fourth consecutive NorPac Championship this weekend in Davidson, N.C. The Cardinal has won three consecutive conference tournament titles and will face Appalachian State on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. PT after earning the West Division’s No. 1 seed. The tourney champion will represent the NorPac in an NCAA Play-In game on Nov. 9 against the tournament champion of the Atlantic-10. Ranking: Unranked (NFHCA).

Football
Stepfan Taylor extended his streak of 100-yard rushing games to five during Saturday’s game at Washington. The performance also continued to prove that the Stanford running game has been able to survive the graduation loss of Toby Gerhart. After seven games, Stanford is averaging 223.7 yards a game in rushing average, which ranks second in the Pac-10 and 12th nationally and is 18.1 yards per game ahead of last year’s pace at the same point of the season (205.6). Rankings: No. 10 (AP); No. 12 (Coaches'); No. 13 (BCS).

Sailing
Stanford picked up its third conference title of the young season, holding off Hawai'i to win the Pacific Coast Conference women's fall championship. Molly McKinney was the top skipper, leading the B Division to a low score, and never finishing lower than fourth in any of her 14 races. The Cardinal had a nine-point lead heading into Day Two on its home waters off Redwood Shores, only to watch the Wahine close and lead by two, heading into the final race. McKinney's team finished third, to the Wahine’s sixth, giving the Cardinal the win. Over on the opposite shore, literally, Stanford finished seventh at the New England Women's Championship. Men's Rankings: Unranked (Sailing World); Women's Rankings: Unranked (Sailing World).

Men’s Soccer
Dominique Yahyavi scored an early goal to lead Stanford to a 3-0 win over Oregon State on Sunday at Cagan Stadium. The goal was the sixth of the season for Yahyavi, which leads the team and is tied for fourth in the Pac-10. It has been a breakthrough year for the senior, who had just three goals coming into this season. Ranking: Unranked (NSCAA).

Women’s Soccer
At the beginning of the season, Stanford kept close attention to Oct. 10, when the Cardinal would travel to UCLA in a match expected to decide the Pac-10 title. Stanford won that one, but as it turns out, Nov. 5 has become the red-letter day. With upstart Oregon State coming to town with an undefeated conference record, the winner of the clash will earn at least a share of the Pac-10 title. The winner can then win it outright by finishing the regular season with a victory on Sunday when Stanford plays host to Oregon, and Oregon State travels to Cal. Oregon State has traditionally been a lower-echelon team in conference play, going 2-22-3 in the Pac-10 from 2006-08. This year, both enter Friday’s match (8 p.m.) at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium at 7-0. Ranking: No. 1 (NSCAA).

Women’s Volleyball
Senior outside hitter Alix Klineman broke into the Pac-10's top-20 for career kills last week. She needs eight to become just the sixth Cardinal player ever to register 1,800. The Manhattan Beach, Calif., native is sixth all-time in school history and could finish her career as only the second Stanford player ever to record 2,000 kills in a career. Ranking: No. 3 (AVCA).

Men’s Water Polo
Stanford (10-5) plays only its second home game of the season, when it takes on Long Beach State on Saturday at noon. The Cardinal will attempt to extend an 11-game home winning streak. Stanford's 5-3 victory over USC on Oct. 9 kept alive a streak that began in 2009 when the Cardinal went a perfect 10-0 at Avery Aquatic Center. It marked Stanford's first undefeated home campaign since going 9-0 at Avery in 2005. Since 2005, Stanford has put up an impressive 39-7 record (.848) at home. Ranking: No. 4 (CWPA).

Wrestling
Stanford opens the 2010-11 season on Sunday for a one-of-a-kind outdoor dual against No. 18 Northwestern. The Cardinal and Wildcats will square-off at the Taube Tennis Center at 3 p.m. Both squads boast three wrestlers ranked in the top-20 in their respective weight classes by InterMat. Admission is free and it has been tabbed one of Stanford's Showdown events. Ranking: Unranked (NWCA).
