GUADALAJARA, Mexico - Another medal was added to the total for Stanford athletes at the 2011 Pan Am Games Monday as former Cardinal wrestler and 2004 NCAA Champion Matt Gentry '05 claimed the bronze medal in the 74 kg class.
In water polo action, Stanford alumni helped lead the U.S. men to an 8-5 Group B win over Brazil, and the U.S. women to a 24-4 rout of Puerto Rico.
Wrestling
Gentry, representing Canada, opened the competition with a 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Peru's Pool Ambrocio to advance to the semifinal round. There, Gentry would fall, 4-2, to Cuba's Yunierki Blanco. The match was even at 1-1 after the first period, but Blanco out-pointed Gentry, 2-1, in the second to take a 3-2 lead and earned the only point of the final period to move on to the gold medal match.
Gentry, relegated to a bronze medal repechage, rebounded against Mexico's Eduardo Valencia. After going up 4-0 in the first period, Gentry overwhelmed Valencia with nine points in the second and claimed a dominant 13-4 win to earn bronze.
Gentry's bronze brought the total for Stanford athletes to 12 so far at the Pan Am Games.
