2011 Pan Am Games Schedule/Results
GUADALAJARA, Mexico - The Stanford contingent of athletes competing at the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico had another medal added to its count in Monday's action as men's swimmer Eugene Godsoe '10 took home silver in the 100-meter backstroke.
Men's Swimming
Godsoe was edged out of a gold medal by Brazil's Thiago Pereira by .05 seconds in the final. Pereira came from fourth position to overtake his Brazilian teammate Guilherme Guido and Godsoe for the gold with a time of 54.56. Godsoe finished at 54.61 for the silver medal, followed by Guido's time of 54.81.
Godsoe, who had the top preliminary time of 55.04, was swimming second, .29 seconds behind Guido at the 50-meter mark (26.20) before the three exchanged spots over the final 50 meters.
Godsoe's silver is the third won at the Games so far by Stanford athletes. All three medals have thus far been won by Cardinal swimmers, as on Saturday Julia Smit captured gold in the 400-meter individual medley and Elaine Breeden took home bronze in the 100-meter butterfly.
Women's Volleyball
The U.S., featuring the Cardinal trio of Cynthia Barboza, Alix Klineman and Cassidy Lichtman, cruised to a 3-0 (25-14, 25016, 31-29) sweep of Mexico to finish 3-0 in Group B play and earn a bye into the semifinal round.
Klineman paced the Americans with 14 kills in the match, while Lichtman made three. Barboza went for nine kills, five digs and a block in a fine all-around effort.
The U.S. received a bye to the semifinals by virtue of winning Group B. There, the Americans will await the winner of Tuesday's Cuba-Peru quarterfinal. The semifinals will take place Wednesday.
