SHENZHEN, China - Competition got underway on Day -1 of the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen, China, late Wednesday night on the West Coast of the United States.
The U.S. men's water polo team, featuring five Stanford alumni, defeated Singapore, 17-0, in its opening Group C game.
All five Stanford players saw action in the victory. The quartet of Janson Wigo (three goals), Sage Wright (three), Drac Wigo (two) and Jeffrey Schwimer (one) accounted for over half of the scoring for the U.S., while Peter Sefton assisted on a pair of goals and made a steal.
The quintet contributed to a defensive effort that kept Singapore off the board the entire way, as the opponent's saw 10 shots on frame turned away.
The U.S. scored four times in three of the four periods, while netting five in the third frame, to account for its scoring.
The U.S. returns to Group C action at 12:40 p.m. Saturday afternoon in China (6:40 p.m. PT Friday night), taking on Serbia.
