The Farm Report: A Final Four Tradition

This week's live Stanford TV, radio and webcast schedule listed below

March 30, 2011

STANFORD, Calif. -

Women’s Basketball
Stanford's 83-60 victory over Gonzaga in the Spokane Regional Final clinched the program's fourth consecutive Final Four trip and 10th overall, tying the Cardinal with Louisiana Tech for third-most Final Four appearances all-time. The trip also makes Stanford only the fourth school to pull off four consecutive Final Fours, matching LSU (2004-08), Connecticut (2000-04, 2008-11) and Tennessee (1986-89, 1995-98, 2002-05). Over the program's 25 NCAA Tournament appearances including this year, Stanford has won two national titles (1990, `92), reached 10 Final Fours (1990-92, 1995-97, 2008-11), 15 Regional Finals and 18 Sweet 16s. Heading into Sunday's national semifinal against Texas A&M, Stanford boasts a record of 65-22 (.747) in tournament play. Ranking: No. 2 (A.P., ESPN/USA Today).

Baseball
Stanford returned from a longer than expected break last week and picked up five victories in six tries, including its first winning weekend since the opening series at Rice. The Cardinal is ranked as high as No. 11 this week in the national polls and has an RPI, according to boydsworld.com of 7. Pac-10 play starts this weekend with the first two weekends on the road -- at Washington State and USC. The Cardinal was picked to finish second in the Pac-10 behind UCLA.

Closer Chris Reed has been lights out since he moved to the bullpen, allowing only one run in seven relief appearances, while racking up three saves. He pitched a perfect 2 2/3 innings in Sunday's series clincher over Long Beach State. Ranking: No. 11 (Baseball America).

Fencing
Stanford earned three All-American honors at the NCAA Championships over the weekend in Columbus, Ohio. Francesca Bassa, Turner Caldwell and Max Murphy each were named. National Finish: 10th.

Women’s Golf
The United States Golf Association has named Dr. Patricia Cornett ’76 captain of the 2012 USA Curtis Cup team. Cornett, a native of Salinas, Calif. and resident of Mill Valley, earned her B.S. degree in biology from Stanford in 1976 and her M.D. from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1980. She currently is a professor or medicine at UCSF Medical Center and the associate chief of staff for education at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.

Cornett, who earned All-America honors at Stanford in 1975, has played in more than 50 USGA championships, starting with the 1971 U.S. Girls’ Junior and including eight U.S. Women’s Open Championships. She was the runner-up at the 1987 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and was a semifinalist in that championship in 1992 and 1999. She also advanced to the semifinals of the 1976 and 1992 U.S. Women’s Amateurs. Cornett has played in the last three USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championships, advancing to the quarterfinals in 2009. Her career victories include the 1990 Women’s Western Amateur. She was a two-time Curtis Cup player (1978 and ’88) and has played in more than 50 USGA championships, including eight U.S. Women’s Opens and the past three Senior Women’s Amateur Championships.

“I am humbled to be selected as captain of the 2012 United States Curtis Cup Team and follow the legacy of Harriot and Margaret Curtis,” said Cornett in a statement given to the USGA. “The sisters’ passion for golf, their spirit of competition and most importantly, their social awareness, have always been an inspiration for me. I also am deeply honored to follow in the footsteps of those prior captains who have so ably led our American teams,” said Cornett. “My hope, as captain, is to not only fulfill the Curtis sisters’ charge, ‘To stimulate friendly rivalry among the women golfers of many lands,’ but also to inspire the newest generation of USA Curtis Cup players as to the importance and magnitude of this historic competition.”

The Curtis Cup is a biennial competition between female amateur teams from the U.S. and Great Britain and Ireland, first played in 1932 at Wentworth (England) Golf Club. In 2010, the U.S. won its seventh consecutive Curtis Cup with a 12½ to 7½ victory at Essex County Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass., giving the U.S. a 27-6-3 overall record in the Match. The 2012 Curtis Cup will be played June 8-11 at Nairn Golf Club in Nairn, Scotland. Women's Ranking: No. 32 (Golfweek/Sagarin); Men's Ranking: No. 16 (Golfweek/Sagarin).

Men’s Gymnastics
The postseason begins Saturday at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at the Air Force Academy. The No. 2 Cardinal will face No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 4 California. The Cardinal has a pair of individuals atop the national rankings with Alex Buscaglia No. 1 on horizontal bar, and Tim Gentry on still rings. Ranking: No. 2 (GymInfo).

Women’s Gymnastics
No. 4-ranked Stanford and No. 9 Michigan are the top two seeds at Saturday’s Ann Arbor Regional and will compete with four other schools for the region’s two qualifying spots for the NCAA Championships April 15-17 in Cleveland. Stanford and Michigan are familiar with each other, having met on Feb. 13 in the same Crisler Arena, with Stanford rallying in the final rotation for a 196.800-196.500 victory.

They also met twice in the 2010 postseason with Stanford winning each matchup, at the NCAA team preliminaries to prevent Michigan from reaching NCAA Super Six, and in finishing 1-2 at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Morgantown, W.Va. Stanford has won their past six matchups -- all in the postseason. Michigan last beat Stanford at the 2001 (April 1) Northeast Regional in Ann Arbor, with the teams finishing 1-2. That was the last time Stanford has competed in a regional at Crisler Arena. Ranking: No. 4 (GymInfo).

Lacrosse
After reeling off eight consecutive victories to begin 2011, the Cardinal finally lost at No. 15 Vanderbilt on Sunday. The loss dropped Stanford to No. 9 in the national rankings, but still puts it in great position considering its tough early schedule. Stanford now concentrates on MPSF play, before closing the regular season with No. 2 Northwestern. Ranking: No. 9 (IWLCA).

Rowing
Stanford's women’s I Eight opened the season with a victory over defending national champion Virginia to highlight the Pac-10 Challenge at Redwood Shores. The Cardinal led the Cavaliers to the 500-meter mark and opened up an open-water margin by halfway. Virginia closed to a boat length by the 1,500-meter mark but was unable to get any closer as Stanford nullified its sprint and crossed the line 3.1 seconds ahead of the Cavalier boat. Both the men’s and women’s teams head to the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay this weekend. Women's Ranking: No. 4 (USRowing); Men's Varsity 8 Ranking: No. 11 (USRowing).

Sailing
The Cardinal picked up a win at the South Regatta in Santa Barbara behind Eliza Richartz and McKenzie Wilson's top A divisional score. Molly McKinney and Iris Clayter piloted Stanford's quartet of women over a field of 29 for the South regional title in the B Division. Stanford has one more weekend of sailing before postseason winds pick up with the conference championships in Long Beach on April 9. Stanford is the defending women's, coed and team champion out of the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Association. Coed Ranking: No. 11 (Sailing World); Women's Ranking: No. 14 (Sailing World).

Softball
The Cardinal finally managed to play some games after two weeks of rain in the Bay Area. Stanford pushed its winning streak to 14 before it was snapped by San Diego State in a 3-2 loss in extra innings on Sunday. However, the Cardinal bounced back with a 10-0 run-rule win over Coastal Carolina later that day. Senior pitcher Ashley Chinn threw a perfect game against the Chanticleers, the second of her career. Junior shortstop Ashley Hansen registered three doubles in the game and three RBI. Ranking: No. 12 (NFCA).

Men’s Swimming
Skip Kenney's swimmers picked up a third-place trophy at the NCAA Championships behind Austin Staab's NCAA titles in the 100-yard butterfly and 200 individual medley, and Bobby Bollier's versatility and runner-up finishes in the 200 fly and 500 freestyle. Chad La Tourette also was a runner-up, in the 1,650 free. Staab also was part of an American-record setting 200 free relay team on the first day. That foursome then broke its own record. Since 1981, Stanford has finished fourth or higher each year, including 26 times in the top three. National Finish: 3rd.

Men’s Tennis
Greg Hirshman continues to be almost automatic when it comes to dual matches. The senior is a fixture in the lower half of Stanford’s lineup and has embraced his role with an energetic and aggressive style of play. Hirshman leads Stanford in dual-match victories (12) and is 8-2 over his last 10 matches. He has been especially tough when playing at the No. 5 spot (9-2 overall) and the No. 6 position (1-0). Last year, Hirshman posted a 2-1 record at the No. 5 spot and had a 15-1 ledger when playing at No. 6. Ranking: No. 12 (ITA).

Women’s Tennis
Hilary Barte and Mallory Burdette have earned their reputations as big-time players at the top of the lineup, but freshmen Kristie Ahn and Nicole Gibbs have combined to go 31-0 so far while alternating appearances at the Nos. 3 and 4 spots. Both have spent time in the national rankings. Entering this week, Gibbs had posted a team-high 29-4 record and was riding a 17-match winning streak while Ahn registered a 27-3 mark and owned a 15-match winning streak. Ranking: No. 1 (ITA).

Track and Field
The Cardinal is off this week after the two-day Stanford Invitational last weekend. The highlights were school records by Katerina Stefanidi and Kori Carter. Stefanidi bettered her own record in the pole vault, clearing 14-6 (4.42m). The Cardinal junior then attempted 4.50m, which would have given her the Olympic ‘A’ Standard, but fell just short. Carter ran 13.51 in the 100-meter hurdles to take down a record that had lasted since 2003. Carter was the top incoming freshman in the event in the nation and wasted no time making her mark on the Stanford record book. Men's Ranking: No. 7 (USTFCCCA); Women's Ranking: No. 12 (USTFCCCA).

Men’s Volleyball
Stanford sits in second place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation heading into a big home weekend against No. 1 USC on Friday and No. 13 Pepperdine on Saturday, both at Maples Pavilion. Unlike last season when five of the MPSF’s 12 teams had a chance to earn at least a share of the conference title going into the season's final day, USC has opened a substantial gap over the Cardinal and everyone else. A victory over USC would keep Stanford’s faint regular-season title hopes alive, but a more realistic motivation is playoff positioning with six teams within three losses of Stanford in the standings. The competition could be for the second and third seeds – spots in the opposite bracket from the Trojans – which could be favorable in seeking a possible NCAA berth by taking a clearer path to the MPSF final. Ranking: No. 3 (AVCA).

Women’s Water Polo
Sophomore two-meter Annika Dries was named MPSF Mikasa Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and has received the honor three times this season in helping the No. 1 Cardinal to an 18-0 start. Dries scored six goals in weekend victories over No. 4 UCLA and at No. 15 UC Davis, and next leads Stanford into a showdown at No. 2 USC on Saturday. Ranking: No. 1 (CWPA).
