STANFORD, Calif. -
Wrestling
Stanford posted its best-ever showing at the NCAA Championships last weekend in Philadelphia, placing 11th. Junior Nick Amuchastegui (174 pounds) became just the second Cardinal wrestler to reach an NCAA final and earned his second career All-America honor with his second-place finish. Joining Amuchastegui as All-Americans were senior Zack Giesen (197 pounds) and sophomore Ryan Mango (125 pounds), who each placed sixth. It marks the first time in the 95-year history of wrestling at Stanford that the Cardinal has produced three All-Americans in the same season. Final National Finish: 11th.
Baseball
Stanford (8-5) is ranked No. 12 in Baseball America's national poll going through a stretch of two weeks without a game. The Pac-10 Conference features six teams ranked in the Top 25, and already have three teams-- Arizona State (15-4), Oregon State (15-4) and Arizona (15-5) had 15 victories to begin the week. The Cardinal, with series against three top-20 schools to begin the season, has played the toughest early-season schedule in the country. Ranking: No. 12 (Baseball America).
A major-league update on former Stanford players:
Stanford had 12 major leaguers last season, of which one retired (Jody Gerut) and another has been lost for the 2011 season (Jason Castro of the Houston Astros). Likely to make clubs out of spring training are Carlos Quentin, beginning his seventh big league season; Jeremy Guthrie, who has pitched in the majors since 2004; Drew Storen as possibly the Nationals’ closer; and Jed Lowrie as a utility infielder for the Red Sox.
In addition, Chris Carter and Sam Fuld are battling for outfield spots with Tampa Bay, as is John Mayberry Jr., with the Phillies. Michael Taylor (Oakland) and Cord Phelps (Cleveland) are hoping to make their MLB debuts, but are likely to begin the season in the minors. Greg Reynolds (Colorado), John Hester (Arizona) and Donny Lucy (White Sox) were also a part of big league camps this spring.
Women’s Basketball
The Cardinal (31-2) captured its school-record 63rd straight victory at Maples Pavilion on Monday by beating St. John’s in the second round of the NCAA tournament, capping a perfect run by the seniors on their home floor for their careers -- the first group in school history to accomplish that feat.
“The last seconds of the game, I thought about what we've done the last four years,” Kayla Pedersen said. “As I was walking off the floor, I took an extra look around. It was a special feeling.”
Tara VanDerveer described the value of Pedersen and Jeanette Pohlen in the run.
“It speaks to their consistency,” VanDerveer said. “They wanted it so badly. We wanted it for them. Jeanette and Kayla have led the way for four years. What a finish.” Ranking: No. 2 (A.P., ESPN/USA Today).
Men’s Golf
Stanford is seeking its first tournament title this academic year and is expected to battle No. 3 Alabama this weekend at the Linger Longer Invitational in Eatonton, Ga. They others are: No. 3 Alabama, No. 14 Georgia, No. 41 Middle Tennessee State, and No. 48 Florida State.
Stanford has lost twice to Alabama during a pair of fall tournaments, at the Olympia Fields (Ill.) Fighting Illini Invitational and the Islesworth (Fla.) Collegiate Invitational, though the Cardinal did beat Georgia in the latter. Stanford’s Andrew Yun, at No. 5, is the highest-ranked golfer in the field, with No. 8 Bud Cauley of Alabama close behind at No. 8. Ranking: No. 16 (Golfweek/Sagarin).

The Cardinal will wrap up its regular season with a dual meet at Cal on Friday night. The meet is expected to be an emotional affair for Cal. It will be the Golden Bears’ last home meet ever for their men’s gymnastics program, which will be cut. Ranking: No. 3 (GymInfo).
Women’s Gymnastics
Stanford sophomore Ashley Morgan captured her first Pac-10 floor exercise championship, extended her winning streak in the event to nine consecutive meets while maintaining the highest scoring average in the country. However, Morgan still slipped behind Florida’s Ashanee Dickerson for the nation’s No. 1 ranking on floor.
Morgan and her teammates suffered through a disappointing fourth-place finish at the conference meet on Saturday, but are the top seed at the six-team NCAA Ann Arbor (Mich.) Regional on April 9. Ranking: No. 4 (GymInfo).

She was a four-time All-American overall. Kate Dwelley was a national runner-up in the 100 free on the final day, giving the senior seven top-16 finishes and 23 in her career — eighth-best all-time at Stanford.
