STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford's Cardinal for the Community campaign (C4C) returned to the Ronald McDonald House on Sunday where Cardinal athletes spent the afternoon with patients and their families. Members of the football, swimming and water polo teams led arts and crafts activities, decorated cookies and played Bingo with children in the facility's common area.
For families staying at Ronald McDonald house, the visit was a welcome break from serious health-related issues.
"She's so happy right now," said one mother watching her daughter from across the room. "It's been amazing staying here. The people are great and the visit from the Stanford athletes is the highlight of our week."
"It's really fun and rewarding to be here," said senior swimmer Sam Woodward. "These families have been through so much and it's nice to bring a little joy to their day."
Football players Josh Nunes, Jordan Richards and Alex Yazdi decided to participate in the event after taking part in the Habitat for Humanity build last weekend.
"We are so lucky to have the opportunities we do at Stanford," said Nunes. "It's our responsibility to give back to the community and all the great things Ronald McDonald House is a part of."
About Cardinal for the Community: Cardinal for the Community connects Stanford student-athletes with community groups to build sustainable partnerships and support the surrounding community. Men’s Basketball
All-Pac-12 Freshman selection Chasson Randle is rewriting Stanford’s freshman record book. With a team-best 30.2 minutes per game, Randle will likely become the first freshman to lead Stanford in minutes since Casey Jacobsen’s 28.5 in 1999-2000. Going into the Pac-12 tournament, Randle’s totals also ranked among all-time Stanford freshmen in the following categories: points (393, third), scoring (13.1, fourth), field goals (134, sixth), field goals attempted (310, second), three-pointers (66, second) and steals (32, fourth). Record: 21-10. Ranking: Unranked.
Women’s Basketball
Stanford is playing for its ninth Pac-12 tournament crown this week in Los Angeles. The Cardinal was to open at USC's Galen Center in Thursday's quarterfinal, taking on No. 8 seed Washington (17-12) at noon. Overall, Stanford owns a 27-2 record in conference tournament play, with the only losses coming in the 2002 and 2006 title games. Record: 28-1. Rankings: No. 2 (AP, USA Today/ESPN).
Baseball
Eric Smith was not one of the big names returning to the Cardinal, but last year’s reserve has gotten off to a strong start after taking over the starting catching duties this season. Smith began the week second on the team in RBIs (14) after driving in three runs Saturday and two Sunday as the Cardinal won two of three at Fresno State. Stephen Piscotty, after a 8-for-16 week, is batting .340 with a team-best 21 RBIs. Pitchers Brett Mooneyham (13 strikeouts) and Mark Appel (11 strikeouts) each had career-highs in strikeouts over the weekend. Record: 11-1. Rankings: No. 2 (Baseball America, USA Today Coaches).
Fencing
Stanford plays host to the NCAA Western Regionals on Saturday at the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation with individuals from four programs competing: Stanford, Air Force, Cal Tech and UC San Diego. Stanford has 18 individuals competing in six weapons in a round-robin format. The men’s competition is from 8:30 a.m.-noon and the women are scheduled from roughly 12:30-3:30 p.m. Rankings: Men and women unranked.
Men’s Golf
Stanford plays at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas, from Friday through Sunday, for the first time. What’s unique about the course, the Southern Highlands Golf Club, is its exclusivity. The club has only 300 members and all joined by invitation. The par-72, 7,510-yard layout was designed by the great Robert Trent Jones Sr. and his son, Robert Trent Jones Jr. Ranking: No. 12 (GolfWeek).
Women’s Golf
Stanford's Sally Watson carded a final-round 76 to tie for eighth in the Bruin-Wave Invitational at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif., on Monday. Watson’s score of 228 enabled her to finish among the top 10 for the third time this season. Ranking: No. 44 (GolfWeek).
Men’s Gymnastics
Stanford posted a season-high score for the second consecutive week, scoring 351.400 against Oklahoma. John Martin (pommel horse) and James Fosco (still rings) claimed individual victories. The Cardinal competes twice this week, at Ohio State on Friday and at the Illinois-Chicago on Sunday. Ranking: No. 4 (GymInfo).
Women’s Gymnastics
Stanford’s victory over Cal on Sunday, in a tri-meet that also included Arizona, gave the Cardinal its 26th consecutive victory over its rival. The Cardinal also extended its’ unbeaten streak against Pac-12 opponents at Burnham to 34 and its winning streak over Arizona to 16. Stanford now has won 17 straight at home (including meets at Maples Pavilion). Record: 9-3. Ranking: No. 11 (GymInfo).
Women’s Lacrosse
Sophomore goalkeeper Lyndsey Munoz has been terrific in goal so far for the Cardinal. Munoz has made 54 saves in just five games, including a career-high 17 against Notre Dame. The Stanford record is 292 saves in a season by Stephanie Turk back in 1998. Record: 1-4. Ranking: No. 20 (IWLCA).
Sailing
It was a quiet weekend for the sailors on the Bay, as light winds resulted in only 34 of 45 races being held at Stanford’s own McIntyre Team Regatta over the weekend. Stanford, with a 5-1 record, was second to Michigan and USC, who each went 6-1. Coed ranking: No. 5 (Sailing World). Women's ranking: No. 6 (Sailing World).
Men’s Soccer
The Cardinal is headed to Costa Rica during spring break for training and competition. Each Stanford team is permitted one foreign trip every four years.
Softball
Going into the week, the Cardinal had won 12 consecutive games, dating back to February 17. Junior pitcher Teagan Gerhart, the Pac-12 and USA Softball National Player of the Week on February 28, led the team to an undefeated record at the DeMarini Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. She earned all five wins in the circle, racking up 26 strikeouts and allowing just three earned runs. Supporting Gerhart in the stands were football-playing brothers Toby and Garth Gerhart. Record: 19-3. Ranking: No. 10 (USA Today/NFCA).
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Stanford won the conference title for coach Skip Kenney for the 31st consecutive season with a 139-point victory over Cal over the weekend at East Los Angeles College. Freshman David Nolan was named the swimmer of the meet following three individual wins and three relay titles in his first championship. Nolan set career-bests in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke as well as the 200 individual medley. All three times made the Stanford top five. Chad La Tourette picked up two more conference titles in the long distances, winning the 1650 freestyle for the fourth consecutive year and winning the 500 free for the first time. The Cardinal's title was helped by its divers, despite not having Kristian Ipsen available for the championships, which were held a week earlier in Federal Way, Wash. Taylor Sishc, Dhruv Tyagi, Noah Garcia and Connor Kuremsky finished in the top-10 and gave Stanford a near 50-point advantage heading into the week. Ranking: No. 3 (collegeswimming.com/CSCAA).
Women's Swimming and Diving
Dr. Rick Schavone will send eight of his divers to the regional Zone Championships in Colorado Springs beginning Thursday in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Seven men and eight women from this regional will qualify. Sophomore Stephanie Phipps is the lone returning NCAA participant having earned All-America honors last year when she finished 16th in the 3-meter. Junior captain Taylor Sishc is the most experienced, participating in his third Zone Championship. Ranking; No. 8 (collegeswimming.com/CSCAA).
Synchronized Swimming
The Stanford synchronized swimming team captured the Western Regional title Sunday, scoring 94.0 total points in Tucson, Ariz. Starting with the trio, Stanford won three of the four events as well as placing first in the 'A' and 'B' figures. Seniors Alex Bollaidlaw and Koko Urata teamed with sophomore Liane Lovitt to win the trio competition with an 88.333.
Men’s Tennis
Stanford's top duo of Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher defended their tournament crown with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in Sunday's championship match at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships in La Jolla, Calif. Klahn and Thacher captured their second consecutive title, picking up a 6-4, 6-4 win over the independent team of Poland’s Kris Kwinta and Australia’s John Peers. Klahn and Thacher become the first team to capture back-to-back titles at the historic tournament since former Stanford standouts Jared Palmer and Jonathan Stark in 1990-91. It's the seventh doubles title for Klahn and Thacher since pairing up as freshmen three years ago. Record: 9-4. Ranking: No. 10 (ITA).
Women’s Tennis
Stanford moved up six spots in the Campbell/ITA Division I rankings to No. 5. The Cardinal was No. 11, a curious spot for a squad that stood at 8-0 overall and posted a win over then-No. 1 Florida, but dropped 10 spots from No. 1 because last week’s rankings were based on the computer point-per-match formula. The change in criteria caused several major changes in the poll. UCLA ascended to the top spot, as the Bruins collected seven victories over teams then in the top 25 of the national rankings, including four wins over top-10 teams. Records: 8-0, 2-0 Pac-12. Ranking: No. 5 (ITA).
Men’s Track and Field
The Cardinal opened the outdoor season at the Cal Outdoor Opener with some great results. One of the top Cardinal performers was Aaron Konigsberg in the javelin. Konigsberg came into the meet having never thrown over 200 feet, but tossed 214-3 on Saturday. The nearly 15-foot personal record was good for fourth in Stanford history. Indoor ranking: No. 13 (USTFCCCA).
Women’s Track and Field
Aisling Cuffe came to Stanford as the top recruit in the nation and had a solid cross-country season, but has really taken off during the indoor track season. Cuffe set the American junior record in the 3,000 meters at the Razorback Invitational in Arkansas in January and lowered it to 9:07.79, which was also the NCAA auto standard, at the UW Last Chance Meet in Seattle. She will run at her first NCAA indoor championships this weekend in Boise. Ranking: No. 16 (USTFCCCA).
Men’s Volleyball
Stanford is on the verge of one school record and one milestone as it heads into a 22-day break from competition. Brad Lawson needs one more service ace to break the school career record he shares with Duncan Blackman (1987-90) of 115. Also, sixth-year head coach John Kosty is two victories away from his 100th. Kosty’s career record is 98-67 and can reach 100 as early as March 31 at USC. Records: 14-5, 11-4 MPSF. Rankings: No. 3 (AVCA), No. 4 (Volleyball Magazine).
Women’s Water Polo
The men's and women's head-coaching positions held by John Vargas and John Tanner, respectively, have been endowed by generous gift from an anonymous donor. The women’s team plays at Hawai’i on Saturday before 14 days away from competition. Records: 13-1, 1-0 MPSF. Ranking: No. 2 (CWPA).
Wrestling
Ryan Mango is the No. 8 seed in the 125-pound weight class at the NCAA Championships, which begin March 15 in St. Louis. Mango (25-5) faces unseeded Shane Young (23-6) of West Virginia in the first round. If the seeds hold, Mango would wrestle No. 1 seed Matt McDonough (31-1) of Iowa in the quarterfinals. At 174, Nick Amuchastegui (20-0) is seeded third and will wrestle unseeded Peter Huntley (21-10) of Navy in the first round. Also in Amuchastegui’s side of the bracket is No. 2 seed Chris Perry (26-0) of Oklahoma State. The top seed is Penn State’s Edward Ruth (26-0). Ranking: Unranked.
