Feb. 28, 2012
STANFORD, Calif. - Baseball became the fourth Stanford team this spring to rise to No. 1, taking over the top spot in the USA Today/Coaches poll after sweeping a three-game series against Texas last weekend.
However, three Stanford teams – women's tennis, men’s volleyball, and women’s water polo -- have or likely will drop from No. 1 after losses over the weekend. That leaves the baseball as Stanford's only current No. 1 team. The baseball team has been ranked No. 1 at some point during 12 of the past 25 seasons.
Baseball
Stanford is off to its best start since the 1998 team began 16-0-1. Going into Tuesday’s night’s game against UC Davis, the No. 1 Cardinal was 7-0. Stanford hit .364 against No. 7 Texas to pull off its second weekend sweep of a top-10 opponent this season. Overall, the team is hitting .344. Every position starter has a multi-hit game and seven have multi-RBI games. As for pitching, the weekend rotation of Mark Appel (1.29 ERA), Brett Mooneyham (2.57) and John Hochstatter (0.71) has accounted for six of the seven wins. Record: 7-0. Rankings: No. 1 (USA Today/Coaches), No. 2 (Baseball America, NCBWA).
Men’s Basketball
Stanford’s four-member senior class of Jarrett Mann, Josh Owens, Jack Trotter and Andrew Zimmermann will be honored in a ceremony prior to Sunday’s game against Cal. The Cardinal owns a 6-4 mark over its past 10 Senior Day contests, with its most recent win from a 75-63 triumph over USC three years ago. Last year’s Stanford team was the first in school history without a senior on its roster. Records: 19-10, 9-8 Pac-12. Ranking: Unranked.
Women’s Basketball
Stanford can close its home season with a 79-game home winning streak if the Cardinal can put away underdog Seattle on Wednesday. The streak began in 2007 and includes 45 victories against Pac-12 schools, six in the NCAA Tournament, two over No. 1 teams, six over top-five teams, and 11 over top-10 teams. Against other conferences, Stanford is 5-0 each against Big East and Big West. Records: 26-1, 17-0 Pac-12. Ranking: No. 2 (AP, ESPN/USA Today).
Men’s Golf
The 12th-ranked Cardinal returns to action on Friday, March 9, at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in San Diego. Freshman Patrick Rodgers is ranked sixth in the Golfweek individual rankings. Ranking: No. 12 (Golfweek).
Women’s Golf
Stanford resumes play next Monday at the Bruin-Wave Invitational, co-hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine at the El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana. The 15-team field consists of BYU, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, San Diego State, Sonoma State, UNLV, Washington and Wisconsin, along with UCLA, Pepperdine and Stanford. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday and wrap up play with 18 on Tuesday. The Cardinal finished fourth last year, with a 54-hole score of 895, 31 strokes behind first place UCLA (860). Kristina Wong tied for fourth with a score of 216, four strokes behind medalist Lee Lopez of UCLA. Ranking: No. 44 (GolfWeek).
Men’s Gymnastics
No. 4 Stanford's put forth its’ best performance of the season Sunday in a 351.050-341.700 victory over No. 8 Michigan at Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal won all six events posting season-highs in floor exercise, still rings, vault and parallel bars to even its’ record against NCAA teams to 4-4. Seniors Cameron Foreman, Gabriel Alvarado, Jordan Nolff and John Martin were honored before the meet with their families. Ranking: No. 4 (GymInfo).
Women’s Gymnastics
Stanford’s final home meet takes place Sunday against Arizona and Cal, when the team will honor seniors Alyssa Brown, Nicole Pechanec, and Jenny Peter. All three were vital members of Stanford’s 2010 team that placed fourth in the country and have persevered through injuries to lead a team that is getting healthier and stronger and the postseason approaches. Record: 7-3. Ranking: No. 12.
Lacrosse
Stanford hopes Saturday’s 14-13 win over No. 9 James Madison will be a turning point. After struggling out of the gate with losses to three ranked teams, a young Cardinal squad seemed to hit its stride in the second half against JMU. In addition to earning a big win, Stanford also avenged its loss in the first round of the 2010 NCAA tournament. During that game, it was James Madison who came from behind to win at home to end Stanford’s season. It was also a big win for the Cardinal program after being 0-3 all-time against James Madison, one of the East Coast’s strongest programs. Record: 1-3. Ranking: No. 16 (IWLCA).
Sailing
Stanford is on a hot streak having won two South regional regattas, the Otter Invite and Monterey, and being edged by Yale for the team title at the Bob Bavier team race in Charleston, S.C. The previous week, the Cardinal women won both the University of South Florida regatta and the UC Davis Intersectional, and the Cardinal was second at the College of Charleston coed race. Coed ranking: No. 9 (Sailing World). Women's ranking: No. 8 (Sailing World).
Softball
The Cardinal finished 5-0 at the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., last weekend. It marks the first time Stanford has gone undefeated in the annual tournament in five tries. Junior pitcher Teagan Gerhart put on a show for fans, striking out 30 batters in 31 2/3 innings while allowing just one run. Record: 13-3. Ranking: No. 10 (ESPN.com/USA Softball).
Squash
Stanford defeated Dartmouth in the final match of the season, to finish seventh at the Howe Cup – the national championship tournament -- in Boston. Stanford won 9-0 to finish with an overall record of 10-7. Final record: 10-7. National Finish: Seventh.
Men’s Swimming
Stanford, 30 consecutive Pac-12 Championships, heads for the conference meet in East Los Angeles. The Belmont Plaza pool, which is the longtime home to the championships in Long Beach, is undergoing repairs. Thanks to the diving team, the Cardinal has the early lead with 147 points, followed by top-ranked Arizona with 94 and newcomer Utah with 76. Those points will be distributed "as if they were live" over Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform. Freshman standout Kristian Ipsen, who was in London with the national team, did not participate. Ranking: No. 3 (CSCAA).
Women’s Swimming
Stanford was edged for the Pac-12 title by rival Cal over the weekend. Maya DiRado won her second consecutive 200-yard backstroke title and Betsy Webb bettered her school-record in the 100 back with a second-place finish. Stanford closed out the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay, after winning the 200 free relay earlier in the week. Ranking: No. 8 (CSCAA).
Men’s Tennis
No. 9 Stanford improved to 9-4 with a 6-1 victory over No. 10 California on Saturday in a non-counting Pac-12 match. Cardinal rookies John Morrissey and Robert Stineman have performed well on the back courts, providing the clinching point in five of the team’s nine team victories. Stineman has clinched three matches and Morrissey two. Record: 9-4. Ranking: No. 7 (ITA).
Women’s Tennis
A few scheduling notes to keep in mind. Stanford will now host San Francisco on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in an added match. The Cardinal was forced to postpone two matches last weekend. Scheduling conflicts prevented matches from Cal Poly (Feb. 24) and San Diego (Feb. 26) from taking place. They are likely to be rescheduled. Records: 5-0, 1-0 Pac-12. Ranking: No. 11 (ITA).
Men’s Track and Field
Remember when running a sub-4 minute mile was the stuff of legends? Well, now it seems to happen all the time on The Farm. Chris Derrick became the latest sub-4 minute miler at Stanford, joining teammates Dylan Ferris and Michael Atchoo who have previously accomplished the same feat. Throw in Elliott Heath who has split well under four minutes in a relay and Tyler Stutzman who ran 4:01.23 last weekend and Stanford has potentially five who could run under four minutes. Overall, Stanford now has 11 sub-4 minute milers indoors. Indoor Ranking: No. 10 (USTFCCCA).
Women’s Track and Field
Stanford has been dominant at the MPSF Championships. In the 11-year history of the indoor meet, the Cardinal has won six times -- more than all of the other teams combined. Stanford’s latest triumph came over the weekend when it bested five other ranked teams, including No. 1 Oregon, to take the team title. Arantxa King won both the long jump and the triple jump to show she is 100 percent after missing last season because of injury. Indoor Ranking: No. 11 (USTFCCCA).
Men’s Volleyball
Brad Lawson had a season-high 24 kills and a .367 hitting percentage in No. 1 Stanford’s five-set loss to visiting USC on Saturday. The rest of the Cardinal combined to hit .210 in the match, far below its team season hitting percentage of .357, the third-highest in the nation. Records: 12-3, 9-2 MPSF. Rankings: No. 2 (AVCA, Volleyball Magazine).
Women’s Water Polo
A UCLA goal at the beginning of the fourth period was enough to beat No. 1 Stanford 5-4 in the championship of the UC Irvine Invitational, a tournament that included the nation’s top 10 teams. Defense dominated after the goal, neither conceding an inch the rest of the way. UCLA missed a five-meter penalty late, and Stanford had two chances saved in the final minute as the Bruins captured the tournament crown. Records: 11-1, 1-0 MPSF. Ranking: No. 1 (CWPA).
Wrestling
Stanford senior Nick Amuchastegui (174 pounds) and junior Ryan Mango (125 pounds) claimed Pac-12 Conference titles over the weekend in Boise, Idaho. They become the first pair of Cardinal wrestlers to win conference titles in the same season since Jeff Bradley and Dave Lee both secured championships in 1985 and 1986. Ranking: No. 15 (InterMat).
