The Farm Report: Updates From Stanford Sports

Feb. 26, 2010

STANFORD, Calif. -

Live weekend Stanford TV, radio and webcast schedule listed below.

Stanford Athletics
Eight Stanford in-season teams are ranked among the top 10 in their sports, including six teams that are either No. 1 or No. 2. Women’s swimming and women’s water polo hold No. 1 spots, with women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s swimming and men’s volleyball each at No. 2. Also, the defending NCAA champion men’s gymnastics team is No. 4, and women’s gymnastics is No. 6.

Baseball
Stanford and Texas, opponents in a three-game series that begins Friday in Austin, have combined for 49 College World Series appearances and 206 CWS games. But despite their rich postseason histories, the teams have met in the CWS only three times – in 1982, 1987 and 2002 – with Texas holding a 2-1 lead. Also of note, Stanford (4-0) is off to its best start since its 2000 CWS runner-up season.

Men’s Basketball
Despite suffering a 68-60 loss to Arizona State on Friday night, two Stanford players achieved noteworthy milestones. Landry Fields became the fifth in school history (joining Adam Keefe, Todd Lichti, Casey Jacobsen and Keith Jones) to reach the 600-point plateau in a single season when he knocked down his first free-throw attempt two minutes into the game. Meanwhile, Jeremy Green’s second three-pointer of the night five seconds before halftime gave him 85 for the season, breaking Jacobsen's season record of 84 established during the 2000-01 campaign.

Women’s Basketball
After the first leg on Stanford's two-game Arizona trip, Jayne Appel is the leading contender for a sombrero, after earning team highs in rebounds (eight) and shooting percentage (.615) in Stanford's 62-43 victory at Arizona State on Thursday night. Stanford's game at Arizona on Saturday will be the decider. About 10-15 years ago, coach Tara VanDerveer decided to make the Arizona trip fun for the team, so she had the sports information director obtain two sombreros, which are awarded at the end of the weekend to the team’s top rebounder and shooter (judged by shooting percentage) over the two games. If one player wins both categories, the second-best shooter is usually given the second sombrero. And they must be worn through the check-in and security lines at the airport on the way home.

General admission tickets to first and second rounds of NCAA Women’s Basketball Championships on March 20th and 22nd at Stanford’s Maples Pavilion are available for $5. The tickets will be available following the Stanford men’s home games against Arizona on Saturday and California on March 6.

Men’s Golf
The second-ranked Cardinal will look to defend their team title next week at the 14-team USC Collegiate Invitational, which will he held at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. Stanford won the title for the fourth time last year with a 54-hole score of 839 while Steve Ziegler won his first collegiate title with a 204 that included a final round of 65. Stanford has finished no lower than fourth in its five tournaments and has won its past two, including the prestigious Mauna Lani Invitational to open the spring season.

Junior Sihwan Kim is ranked fourth in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin individual rankings.

Women’s Golf
Caroline O’Connor’s squad is off to a solid start this spring, following up its Peg Barnard Invitational title with third place at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., earlier this week. Though the event was shorted to 36 holes due to inclement weather, Stanford finished 10 strokes ahead of No. 2 Auburn and 23 strokes in front of No. 5 USC. Sally Watson, a freshman from Earlsferry, Scotland, tied for 10th after carding rounds of 71 and 75. She has three top-10 finishes in her past four events, including her first collegiate title at the Peg Barnard Invitational. The Cardinal, ranked 13th nationally by Golfstat, will participate in the Bruin-Wave Invitational at the Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita starting Monday.

Men’s Gymnastics
Tim Gentry is the No. 1 ranked collegiate gymnast on rings. Others in the top 10 are Eddie Penev (No. 2) and Gentry (No. 8) on the floor, James Fosco (No. 8) on rings, Alex Buscaglia (No. 3) and Penev (No. 8) on vault, Nicholas Noone (No. 9) on parallel bars and Buscaglia (No. 5) on the horizontal bar.

Women’s Gymnastics
Stanford plays host to a four-team meet on Sunday, with North Carolina included in the Maples Pavilion event. North Carolina has two sisters of current Stanford gymnasts on its roster – senior Christine Nguyen and freshman Michelle Ikoma. They are the sisters of Cardinal sophomore Catherine Nguyen and junior Danielle Ikoma.

Lacrosse
Junior goalie Annie Read has made 26 saves in her first two games this season. Going into Friday’s game, Read had raised her save percentage from .434 in 2009 to .510 this year.

Sailing
Stanford will get its first look at the national field, traveling to the Bob Bavier Team Race in Charleston, S.C., for races Saturday and Sunday. The Cardinal will feature a young team, with just one senior, Peter Stemler, skippering one of the three teams.

Softball
Alissa Haber hit two home runs and went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Stanford to an 8-7 victory over No. 21 Tennessee on Thursday to open the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. It was Stanford’s first victory over a ranked opponent this season. Haber, a senior outfielder, leads the team with 17 hits, 13 runs, 13 RBI and a 1.032 slugging percentage. Stanford continues play Friday, with games against No. 23 Northwestern and Long Beach State.

Women’s Swimming
Julia Smit broke her own American, NCAA, Pac-10 and school records in the 200-yard individual medley, lowering the standard to 1:52.31 on Day Two of the Pac-10 Championships on Thursday night in Long Beach, Calif. Smit, Betsy Webb, Sam Woodward and Kate Dwelley proved their dominance in the 200 free relay, giving Stanford its first conference title in that event for the first time since 1998.

Men’s Track and Field
Leading the Cardinal in the field events this season have been Jules Sharpe in the high jump and Geoffrey Tabor in the shot put. Sharpe ranks No. 20 nationally in the high jump (7-1), while Tabor ranks No. 33 in the shot (58-5¼).

Women’s Track and Field
Whitney Liehr’s 41-10½ in the triple jump ranks No. 21 in the nation and makes her the top qualifier for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor championships in Seattle on Friday and Saturday.

Men’s Volleyball
Senior middle blocker Garrett Werner broke the Stanford career record for total blocks in the rally-scoring era (since 2001) during a four-set victory at USC on Feb. 20. Werner had seven blocks in the match, including two solo, to increase his all-time total to 291. That broke the mark of 289 set by Chris Ahfeldt from 2003-06.

Women's Water Polo
Sophomore two-meter Melissa Seidemann continued her great scoring pace last weekend, scoring three goals in Stanford's 10-4 victory at San Jose State. Seidemann, last year's top scorer with 59 goals, has already scored 22 goals through the season's first nine games.

Wrestling
Sophomore Nick Amuchastegui has been awarded the No. 1 seed at 165 pounds in the Pac-10 Championships Friday and Saturday in Davis, Calif. He was the runner-up last year at the same weight.
