STANFORD, Calif. -
Junior Michael Atchoo (Troy, Mich./Troy High School) of the Stanford men’s track and field team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of February 18-24.
Atchoo ran the mile in 3:57.14 to break school and meet records at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor championships on Saturday. Atchoo broke Michael Stember’s Stanford indoor mark of 3:58.40 from 2000, and the MPSF meet record of 3:58.20 set in 2010 by Oregon’s Andrew Wheating.
Atchoo led Stanford to a 1-2 finish in the race, with both he and Tyler Stutzman breaking four minutes. Atchoo’s time was the fastest by any Stanford runner in 27 years, indoors or outdoors. Olympian Jeff Atkinson’s outdoor 3:55.16 in 1986 is the only faster mile in school history.
This is Atchoo’s first Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor and the first for the men’s track and field team in the 2013 season. The Cardinal finished fifth in the meet and looks forward to the NCAA indoor championships March 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark.
