The Farm Report: Updates From Stanford Sports

STANFORD, Calif. -

Live Stanford TV, radio and webcast listings for this week below

Baseball
Stanford’s three-game sweep of No. 5 Rice drew some national media attention, including this from Eric Sorenson of Collegebaseballtoday.com: “Keep in mind that the Owls were the No. 5 team in the country coming into this weekend. And also, remember that from my NorCal Media Day interview with Coach Mark Marquess, he said that offense – and the lack of power in particular – was his biggest concern going into this season. But the Trees scored 27 runs off of what is normally one of the more stout pitching staff in the country, year-in, year-out... this was a great series sweep for Stanford of the highly respected Owls.”

Men’s Basketball
One of the leading candidates for Pac-10 Player of the Year, Landry Fields continues to stuff the stat sheet in almost every category, including minutes. Fields was on the floor for every minute of Stanford’s road sweep this past weekend in Oregon. Fields has played at least 40 minutes in six games this year.

Women’s Basketball
Jayne Appel earned her ninth Pac-10 Player of the Week honor Monday, giving her nine for her career and tying Candice Wiggins for most Pac-10 POWs in a career. She averaged 19.0 points and 11.0 rebounds while shooting 60.7 percent from the field during Stanford’s home weekend sweep of Oregon and Oregon State. Stanford clinched a share of its 10th straight Pac-10 title and the No. 1 seed at the Pac-10 Tournament. Also, the team had its Senior Night Saturday which featured us honoring Jayne Appel, Rosalyn Gold-Onwude, Michelle Harrison, JJ Hones and Melanie Murphy.

Men’s Gymnastics
Tim Gentry continued an outstanding season by placing second in the all-around at the Pacific Coast Classic on Saturday. His score of 88.5 was a career high and the fourth best in the nation this season.

Women’s Gymnastics
Returning home to compete for the final time as a collegian, Phoenix-area native Carly Janiga set a collegiate career best of 39.650 to win the all-around and three other events in Stanford's 196.675-195.900 dual-meet victory over Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. In two previous collegiate meets in the Valley of the Sun, Janiga had never won. But Friday, she tied a career best of 9.95 in the balance beam, and also scored high to win the floor exercise (9.925) and uneven bars (9.925), in addition scoring a 9.85 on the vault for third.

Lacrosse
Sarah Flynn led Stanford to a road split over the weekend with seven goals in two games. Last year, Flynn led the Cardinal with 36 goals and now has 59 goals for her career. The Stanford career record for goals is 143 by Megan Burker from 2003-06.

Women’s Tennis
Freshman Mallory Burdette is 17-3 through her first 20 career singles matches. She might equal or surpass sister Lindsay, a senior on this year’s team who went 31-6 during her rookie campaign in 2006-07. But overtaking Erin, the oldest sister of the Burdette trio, will be a challenge. Erin posted a 43-7 record during her freshman season in 2001-02.

Men’s Track and Field
No. 13 Stanford has excelled in the distances this indoor season with four top-10 national rankings: Justin Marpole-Bird (sixth) and Dylan Ferris (eighth) in the mile, Jacob Riley (eighth) in the 5,000 meters and the distance medley relay (second) of J.T. Sullivan, Amaechi Morton, Ferris and Marpole-Bird.

Women’s Track and Field
The Cardinal women will look to defend its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor title this weekend in Seattle. The unranked Cardinal will have to overcome No. 1 Oregon and No. 16 Arizona, among others, for a second-straight conference title.

Softball
Senior Alissa Haber led the Cardinal to four wins at the Stanford Nike Invitational, improving the team’s record to 8-1. The Newark, Calif., native hit .583, going 7 for 12 to score four runs and tally eight RBI. Her hits included three doubles and a triple to register a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .643 on-base percentage. Stanford travels to Palm Springs, Calif., this week to participate in the Cathedral City Classic.

Men’s Swimming and Diving
The Cardinal's victory over Cal in the Big Swim came down to its third-place team in the final relay. Cal, paced by their Olympic heavyweight Nathan Adrian, won the majority of the events. However, Stanford’s Geoff Cheah, who swam for Hong Kong at the World Championships, made the difference by touching the wall nearly a half second ahead of the fourth-place Cal team for the dual victory. The Cardinal next competes at the Pac-10 Championships (beginning Feb. 25 for diving and March 3 for swimming) when it tries for its 29th consecutive conference title.

Also, Stanford diver Brent Eichenseer stepped up to win both the one and three-meter competitions against Cal while fellow All-American Dwight Dumais was out with a shoulder injury.

Synchronized Swimming
Stanford won the Western Regional title on Sunday in Tucson, Ariz., with freshman Jessica Guenther capturing the solo competition to extend her streak of victories to five.

Men’s Volleyball
Sophomore Brad Lawson was nearly unstoppable during Stanford’s split at No. 4 Pepperdine (a three-set loss) and No. 3 USC (a four-set victory), combining for 45 kills and a .493 hitting percentage. Lawson’s 29 kills against USC marked his personal collegiate career high and a team season high.

Women’s Water Polo
No. 1 Stanford won its ninth consecutive game to start the season, beating host San Jose State, 10-4, on Saturday.

Wrestling
Stanford is preparing for the Pac-10 Conference Championships, to be held Friday and Saturday in Davis, Calif. Last season, the Cardinal had eight place-winners, including four top-three finishers, and will look to improve on that this season.
