STANFORD, Calif. -
Baseball
Opening Day is upon us and the Stanford baseball team enters its Friday opener at Rice with high expectations. For the first time in the history of Baseball America’s 11-year annual recruiting survey, Stanford had the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class, headlined by Los Angeles outfielder Austin Wilson, Texas utility player Brian Ragira, San Lorenzo righthander A.J. Vanegas and Burbank infielder Lonnie Kauppila. The class adds to the No. 2-ranked class a year ago that featured Kenny Diekroeger, Stephen Piscotty, Jake Stewart and Mark Appel, the starting Opening Day pitcher. Appel, a righthander out of Monte Vista High School in Danville, is a second-team preseason All-America selection by Baseball America. Appel went 2-1 with a 5.92 ERA as a reliever and spot starter as a freshman. Ranking: No. 13 (Baseball America).
Men’s Basketball
After fighting through the longest cold-shooting stretch of his career, Jeremy Green has produced four consecutive 20-point games, capped with Saturday’s season-tying 24-point effort at Washington. The 20-point outings followed a forgettable eight-game span in which Green shot just 28.4 percent overall and 27.1 percent from beyond the arc. Over the past four games, Green is averaging 23.0 points per game while shooting 52.7 percent overall, 55.6 percent from three-point territory and 86.4 percent from the foul line. Ranking: No. 120 (RPI).
Women’s Basketball
This weekend's trip to Los Angeles has shaped up to be a crucial weekend for both the Pac-10 regular-season championship picture as well as that of the Pac-10 Tournament's bracket. With the reformatting of the tournament, the regular season's top two teams will receive double-byes into the semifinals, to be held Friday, March 11 at Staples Center. Stanford, currently atop the Pac-10 at 13-0, is five games ahead of third-place USC in the loss column, and with a victory at Galen Center on Friday night can clinch one of the coveted semifinal berths. Ranking: No. 3 (AP, ESPN/USA Today).
Men's Golf
Zack Miller ('07) shot rounds of 72, 69, 66 and 71 to tie for ninth at last week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Miller was paired with Phil Mickelson and Hunter Mahan on Sunday when he fired a final round 71 at Pebble Beach to earn his first top-10 finish in just his fourth PGA Tour event. Joseph Bramlett '10 missed the cut after rounds of 69, 71 and 75. Both Miller and Bramlett are in the field at this week's Northern Trust Open at the Riveria Golf Club in Pacific Palisades. Ranking: No. 15 (Golfweek/Sagarin).
Women's Golf
Stanford will look to defend its team title at the 10-team, 36-hole Peg Barnard Invitational scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Stanford Golf Course. This year's field includes California, Washington, Washington State, UC Davis, Santa Clara, Fresno State, San Jose State, Colorado, Rollins and host Stanford. Cal is the highest-ranked team in the field, checking in at No. 7 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll. The teams will tee off at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. Stanford has won the last three Barnard invitationals, including last year's event when the Cardinal rallied from an eight-stroke deficit in the final round to edge Cal by one stroke for the team title. Sally Watson earned co-medalist honors with Cal's Joanne Lee after both golfers finished at 144 for 36 holes. Ranking: No. 34 (Golfweek/Sagarin).
Men’s Gymnastics
In its final home meet of the season, Stanford plays host to the Stanford Open. The event begins on Friday, but will be highlighted by the NCAA and Elite Session on Saturday night, beginning at 7 p.m. In the NCAA session, the Cardinal will face collegiate foes California and Oklahoma, as well as a Japanese Collegiate All-Star team and Elites. The matchup among Stanford, Cal and Oklahoma will be an early preview of the three elite teams in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Japanese team is made up of the top individuals from across the country. Ranking: No. 3 (GymInfo).
Women’s Gymnastics
Stanford is 13-0 for the first time in program history after beating a total of four Top-10 teams in winning a pair of triangular meets last weekend in the Midwest. Stanford’s previous best dual-meet start was 12-0 in 2009, a season that ended with an eighth place national finish. The Cardinal is No. 2 in the country going into its Friday dual meet at Arizona. As for each event, Stanford has the second-best national season average on beam, second on floor, third on bars, and sixth on vault. Ranking: No. 2 (GymInfo).
Lacrosse
Two years ago, Stanford lost a home game to Syracuse in a game that ultimately cost the Cardinal an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. Though Stanford can now qualify automatically by winning the MPSF Tournament, a victory over Syracuse can right an old wrong. No. 13 Stanford (2-0) plays host to No. 5 Syracuse on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cagan Stadium. Ranking: No. 13 (IWLCA).
Softball
The Cardinal opened the 2011 season by going 4-1 at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Stanford outscored its opponents 38-11 and won two games by virtue of the run-rule. Sophomore Jenna Rich led the team with six extra-base hits, including four home runs, 13 RBI and seven runs scored. Ranking: No. 19 (NFCA).
Squash
Stanford will look to avenge an earlier season loss to Trinity as the Cardinal and Bantams square off in the first round of the College Squash Association Women's National Championships, commonly referred to as the Howe Cup, in Princeton, N.J., on Friday night. The Cardinal, seeded sixth, suffered a hard-fought, 5-4 setback to Trinity earlier this season. Kyla Sherwood, Samantha Buechner, Julie Koenig and Julia Hemmindinger accounted for the Cardinal's four victories against the nation's third ranked team. The winner advances to face either second-ranked Harvard or No. 7 Cornell on Saturday. The top half of the draw has top-ranked Yale squaring off against No. 8 Dartmouth and No. 5 Princeton taking on fourth-seeded Penn. Women's Ranking: No. 6 (CSA). Men's Ranking: No. 23 (CSA).
Swimming
Stanford will be well represented at the 2011 World University Games in China this summer as 10 Cardinal swimmers were among those invited by Team USA. Bobby Bollier will return as a silver medalist from 2009 Games. Seven Stanford women will make up the roster: seniors Kelsey Ditto, Kate Dwelley and Liz Smith, junior Sam Woodward and freshmen Maya DiRado, Felicia Lee, and Andie Taylor. Joining Bollier among the men will be David Mosko and Curtis Lovelace. The full WUG roster could also include England's Natalie Durant, Hong Kong's Geoff Cheah, Singapore's Parker Lam, Norway's Eirik Ravnan and Canada's Matthew Swanston and Rebecca Hinds. Men's Ranking: No. 2 (CSCAA).
Women’s Swimming
No. 1 Stanford was upset at No. 4 Cal on Saturday, as the Golden Bears were the instigators of the Cardinal's first loss in 34 tries. Stanford's senior class lost just two dual meets in their careers, at Cal this year and at Georgia in 2007, going 35-2. Saturday's meet came down to the final event, when Cal's Liv Jensen touched the wall ahead of senior Kate Dwelley to secure the 10-point victory. Jensen swept the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, and was the anchor leg on the winning 400 medley and 200 free relay teams. Kelsey Ditto and Andie Taylor went 1-2 in both the 500 and 1,000 freestyles, switching spots in the longer race. Stanford swept the diving as well, as January Pac-10 Diver of the Month Meg Hostage won the one-meter and freshman Stephanie Phipps snapped Hostage's eight-dive win streak with a win in the three-meter. On Friday, Hostage won the three-meter at BYU. Ranking: No. 1 (CSCAA).
Synchronized Swimming
Stanford won all four events in its final home event of the season, while beating Arizona, 98-43.5 on Saturday at Avery Aquatic Center. Junior Maria Koroleva won the A Elements, freshman Leigh Haldeman won the B figures, Maria Koroleva and Olivia Morgan won the duet, and junior Alex Bollaidlaw, Koroleva and sophomore Jessica Guenther won trio. Stanford travels to San Antonio, Texas, for the IUW Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
Men’s Tennis
Stanford opens the ITA Team Indoor Championship on Friday in Seattle against Florida at noon. Stanford is the No. 7 seed in the 16-team event, to Florida’s No. 10. The winner likely will play No. 2 seed USC on Saturday. Either way, Stanford will play the Trojans in a Pac-10 dual in Los Angeles on Feb. 26. Stanford lost in last year’s first-round match, to Texas. Virginia is the top seed. Ranking: No. 7 (ITA).
Women’s Tennis
Defending NCAA champion Stanford is the top seed at the ITA Team Indoor Championship, to be played Friday through Monday in Charlottesville, Va. The No. 1 Cardinal plays Arkansas in the first round on Friday at 4:30 p.m. PT. No. 8 seed Michigan or unseeded Georgia Tech will meet the Stanford-Arkansas winner in the quarterfinals Saturday. Ranking: No. 1 (ITA).
Indoor Track and field
Elliott Heath continued his amazing indoor season with a breathtaking final lap of the 5,000 meters at the Flotrack Husky Invitational in Seattle last weekend. Heath was running in the middle of the lead pack with one 200-meter lap to go when he dropped his head and blew past the field, running a 25-second final lap to win going away. Heath’s time of 13:37.77 was a Stanford indoor record, eclipsing the 13:40.91 by 2008 U.S. Olympian Ian Dobson in 2004. Men's Ranking: No. 7 (USTFCCCA). Women's Ranking: No. 21 (USTFCCCA).
Men’s Volleyball
Though Stanford has played inconsistently at times, the Cardinal is off to its best start since 1998 – even better than its national championship season of last year. Stanford’s overall record of 9-3 is the best since the 1998 team had the same 12-match mark. And Stanford’s 5-3 conference record matches the 2010 team as the best since the ’98s began 6-2. Last year, Stanford began 7-4 overall before reeling off eight consecutive victories. As for the 1998 team, the Cardinal finished 15-8 and lost to Pepperdine in the first round of the MPSF tournament. The last time a Stanford team had a better 12-match overall start was during its 1997 national championship season, when the Cardinal began 10-2 on the way to a 27-3 finish. Ranking: No. 5 (AVCA).
Women’s Water Polo
Top-ranked Stanford (8-0) has five players with 10 or more goals. Junior Pallavi Menon leads with 14, sophomore Annika Dries has 13, freshman Kaley Dodson 12, Alyssa Lo 11, and Melissa Seidemann 10. Stanford plays for the first time in two weeks with a Sunday game at No. 19 Pacific, before the big UCI Invitational the following week. Ranking: No. 1 (CWPA).
Wrestling
The Cardinal upset two top-20 teams, Cal Poly and Arizona State, last weekend to close out the Pac-10 season with a 4-2 record. Stanford honored its four seniors, Lucas Espericueta, Zack Giesen, Justin Paulsen and Dylan Rush before Sunday's dual against ASU. Giesen earned two victories over the weekend to bring his career total to 102, tying for the fifth-most in school history. Ranking: No. 20 (InterMat).
