The Farm Report: Knocking Out No. 1

This week's live Stanford TV, radio and webcast schedule listed below

Feb. 15, 2012

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford, with its 17 consecutive Directors' Cups on display, is used to be being the hunted. But over the past two weeks, the Cardinal was doing the hunting, knocking off three No. 1 teams in as many sports.

The trend began in Provo, Utah, on Feb. 3-4 when the Stanford men's volleyball team beat No. 1 BYU not once, but twice, on back-to-back days. It marked Stanford's first two-match road sweep at BYU since 1991.

On Saturday, Stanford's women's swimming team, ranked No. 8, set two pool records and upset No. 1 California, 174-126, in the Big Swim.

And on Sunday, the Cardinal women's tennis team earned a measure of revenge with a 5-2 victory over visiting Florida in a rematch of the past two national championship team finals.

Baseball
Pitching matchups for Stanford's season-opening series against No. 10 Vanderbilt this weekend at Sunken Diamond have been set.

On Friday for the 5:30 opening night game, No. 2 Stanford will use junior righthander Mark Appel (6-7, 3.02 in 2011), the projected No. 1 pick in June's Major League Baseball amateur draft, against Vandy sophomore lefty Kevin Ziomek (3-0, 1.59).

On Saturday (1 p.m.), Stanford lefty Brett Mooneyham (3-7, 5.07 in 2010) returns after a year's absence because of injury to face either junior righty Drew VerHagen, a junior college transfer, or freshman righty Tyler Beede.

On Sunday (1 p.m.), the Stanford start will go to either junior righty Dean McArdle (7-4, 4.21) or sophomore righty A.J. Vanegas (1-0, 3.35), against the Commodores' junior lefty Sam Selman (0-0, 1.42).

By the way, Vanderbilt outfielder Mike Yastrzemski is the grandson of Boston Red Sox great Carl Yastrzemski. Rankings: No. 2 (Baseball America), No. 3 (USA Today).

Men's Basketball
With at least six games remaining - five in the regular season and at least one in the Pac-12 tournament - Stanford can achieve the most victories in coach Johnny Dawkins' four seasons. The Cardinal needs to win four more to reach 21 victories.

Under Dawkins, Stanford went 20-14 in 2008-09. The team's current records are 17-8 overall and 7-6 in the Pac-12 and the Cardinal already has clinched its best season since then. Stanford plays host to Oregon State and Oregon on Thursday and Sunday, respectively, before a Colorado-Utah trip and a regular-season finale at home against Cal. Records: 17-8, 7-6 Pac-12. Ranking: Unranked.

Women's Basketball
There's no quantifying exactly how important the Ogwumike sisters are to the Stanford team, but here's an indication: Nnemkadi and Chiney Ogwumike have combined to score 860 of Stanford's 1,799 points. That's 48 percent of the Cardinal scoring. In addition, they have grabbed 478 of the Cardinal's 1,056 rebounds. That's 46 percent.

In comparison, other teams may have two players close to those percentages in points. Baylor's Brittney Griner and Odyssey Sims combine to score 48 percent of the Bears' points. But nowhere are the same two players as dominant in rebounding. Stanford is believed to be the only school in the country with the same two players among the nation's top 100 in both scoring and rebounding. Baylor's top two rebounders are Griner and Destiny Williams, not Sims. And they own 38 percent of Baylor's rebounds. Records: 22-1, 13-0 Pac-12. Rankings: No. 3 (AP, USA Today/ESPN).

Men's Golf
Stanford shot a final round 292 (+4) but finished eighth at the San Diego Intercollegiate played at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista on Tuesday. The Cardinal finished 32 strokes behind first place Washington which captured the event with a 54-hole team score of 902 (+6). Ranking: No. 12 (GCAA Coaches).

Women's Golf
Stanford prepares for its final home event when it plays host to the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford Golf Course on Saturday at Sunday. The Cardinal won the event three consecutive times before finishing second last season. The Cardinal won Peg Barnard team titles in 1995, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2008, and 2010. The tournament was not held in 2009. Ranking: Unranked.

Men's Gymnastics
In a rematch of the top two teams in the NCAA last season, 2011 runner-up Oklahoma reversed its result by beating the Cardinal, 351.600-343.700 at Berkeley's Haas Pavilion on Sunday. Cal (349.400) also finished ahead of Stanford. Stanford victories in the tri-meet came from Jordan Nolff on rings and Eddie Penev on vault. Ranking: No. 4 (GymInfo).

Women's Gymnastics
A highlight for Stanford during its dual meet victory at Cal on Sunday was the official collegiate debut of sophomore captain Amanda Spinner, a Danville, Calif., native who competed for the first time in more than two years after undergoing six knee operations. Spinner scored 9.750 on the beam to place sixth. Spinner competed in an exhibition beam routine during Stanford's meet at Oregon State on Jan. 27, but this was her first time in the Cardinal lineup. Record: 5-2. Ranking: No. 12 (GymInfo).

Lacrosse
It was a tough weekend for Stanford, dropping a pair of home games to ranked opponents. However, a young Cardinal team began to show promise on Sunday in the second half against No. 18 Ohio State. After trailing and being outshot 15-6 in the first half, Stanford came out with renewed energy in the second, even if it didn't show on the scoreboard. The Cardinal won 9 of 14 draw controls in the second half and outshot the Buckeyes, 22-11. Ohio State goalkeeper Tori DeScenza made 11 saves in the half, thwarting several excellent scoring chances from the Cardinal. Record: 0-0. Ranking: No. 6 (IWLCA).

Softball
After a 4-1 start to the season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., Stanford opens its home season on Friday with a 2:30 p.m. game against Pacific. The contest is part of the Stanford Nike Invitational at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The four-team event opens with Nevada against Pacific at 10 a.m. and play should continue until about 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. The championship is set for Sunday at 12:15 p.m. Record: 4-1. Ranking: No. 8 (USA Today/NFCA).

Sailing
Competing at its home base of Redwood Shores last weekend, Stanford won both regional North events and finished second, three points behind USC, in the Bryson Women's Championship. On Saturday in the coed races, Stanford finished with the top-four spots, while on Sunday the Cardinal had the top three teams among 19 competitors. The Cardinal women held to a four-point first-day lead, before surrendering to USC on Day Two. Coed ranking: No. 9 (Sailing World). Women's ranking: No. 8 (Sailing World).

Men's Swimming and Diving
Graduate Dwight Dumais, competing in the 3-meter dive in Germany last Friday at the FINA Grand Prix, finished 15th of 34 competitors, just missing the semifinals by three places and 12 points. Ranking: No. 3 (CSCAA).

Women's Swimming and Diving
Stanford knocked off No. 1-ranked Cal to close out the regular season on Saturday, winning 11 events. Stanford set three Avery Aquatic Center records, beginning with the 200-yard medley relay. Three events later, Felicia Lee set the pool standard in the 100 backstroke during a stretch in which the Cardinal won the first five events and never trailed. Freshman Katie Olsen was a part of the winning 200 medley relay team and also picked up her own victory in the 100 breaststroke. Stephanie Phipps was the lone woman to win two events, winning the 1- and 3-meters. Ranking: No. 8 (CSCAA).

Men's Tennis
Stanford bounced back from home losses to USC and UCLA by beating BYU, 5-2, behind Ryan Thacher's straight-set victory over Georgy Batrakov, 6-1, 6-3, on Friday. Ranking: No. 9 (ITA).

Women's Tennis
Stanford sophomore Kristie Ahn, who captured the Pac-10 singles title last year, finally got to play against Florida after all. In her first singles match since May 23, Ahn beat Florida's Alex Cercone, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (4) at No. 4 singles on Sunday at Taube Family Tennis Stadium to help Stanford to a 5-2 victory over the top-ranked Gators. Ahn's last singles match came in last year's NCAA semifinals against Baylor when she had to retire because of an ankle injury. Therefore, she was unable to play against Florida that night. Florida won the final, 4-3. Ranking: No. 2 (ITA).

Men's Track and Field
Chris Derrick ran a 13:19.58 in the 5,000 meters at the Millrose Games setting a Stanford indoor record by 15 seconds. Including outdoors, Ian Dobson (13:15.33) and Ryan Hall (13:16.03) have run faster. Derrick's time was an Olympic `A' Standard. There are now 12 runners in the world with the `A' Standard early in the 2012 Olympic process. The Millrose champion was Bernard Lagat, the former world champion and new U.S. indoor record holder. Lagat joins Derrick as the only Americans with the `A' Standard. Derrick now ranks fifth on the all-time NCAA list for the indoor 5,000 meters. He is the second American behind former record holder Galen Rupp. The top three on the list are Kenyan-born runners that finished ahead of Derrick at Millrose. Ranking: No. 12 (USTFCCCA).

Women's Track and Field
Derrick was not the only Stanford athlete to run a blazing 5,000 this weekend. Kathy Kroeger earned the NCAA auto standard at the Flotrack Husky by running of 15:46.26. The time also ranks third in Stanford history. Ranking: No. 17 (USTFCCCA).

Men's Volleyball
A week after Stanford swept a two-match trip at BYU for the first time since 1991, the Cardinal beat Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge on the road for the first time since 2003. The Cardinal has had trouble with both teams in recent years, losing all three to Long Beach last season and going a combined 2-6 since 2004 at the Walter Pyramid. Stanford was 1-5 since 2006 at Northridge. Records: 9-2, 6-1 MPSF. Rankings: No. 3 (Volleyball Magazine), No. 4 (AVCA).

Women's Water Polo
Stanford stayed perfect with a 13-5 victory over upstart San Jose State on Saturday. Freshman Kiley Neushul scored all four of her goals in the second half, including the first two in the third period which helped Stanford take control with a 7-3 lead. Stanford is in the midst of an unusually slow section of its schedule in which it plays only twice - against San Jose and Santa Clara - in a period of two weeks before playing four times in one weekend at the UC Irvine Invitational Feb. 25-26. Record: 7-0. Ranking: No. 1 (CWPA).

Wrestling
The Cardinal has completed its dual meet season and is in the midst of a three-week span without competition as it prepares for the Pac-12 tournament in Boise on Feb. 26 and the NCAA championships in St. Louis on March 15-17. Nick Amuchastegui at 174 pounds and Ryan Mango at 125 are expected to be No. 1 seeds at Pac-12s. Amuchastegui is ranked No. 1 in the nation and Mango is No. 5. Ranking: Unranked.
