This week's live Stanford TV, radio and webcast schedule listed below
Feb. 8, 2012
STANFORD, Calif. - The Cardinal for the Community program concluded a successful 2011 in which 187 Stanford student-athletes from 15 teams spent time supporting local communities. The program was involved with The Opportunity Center, Stanford GOALS, the Shelter Network, Ronald McDonald House and Haven House accumulating 840 hours of community service. Cardinal for the Community will continue in 2012 with four events scheduled through April.
Football
Everyone associated with the Stanford football is riding high following last week’s national letter of intent signing day, in which the Cardinal landed four five-star recruits. The class has been ranked No. 1 in the Pac-12 Conference and No. 5 nationally by Rivals.com. As head coach David Shaw points out, ranking recruiting classes is an inexact science, to say the least.
In a recent Inside College Football column, SI.com columnist Andy Staples re-ranked recruiting classes from 2009 based on three-year success rate of the particular program. It’s no surprise that Alabama’s and LSU’s 2009 recruiting classes, which were ranked No. 1 and 2 by Rivals.com, fared very well in Staples’ poll, holding down the top two spots.
Stanford’s 2009 recruiting class, which featured Stepfan Taylor, Zach Ertz, Tyler Gardner, Shayne Skov, Levine Toilolo, Terrence Stephens and Terrence Brown, to name a few, was ranked 20th nationally on signing day, but held down the No. 3 spot in Staples’ poll after helping the Cardinal to compiled a 31-8 record over the last three seasons.
“The Cardinal were on the verge of something special when this group signed,” Staples wrote. “The 2008 class, which featured quarterback Andrew Luck, will be remembered as the catalyst for this era of Stanford football, but the 2009 class provided some important pieces. Gaffney and Taylor give the Cardinal two bruising runners, and Ertz and Toilolo teamed with Coby Fleener to produce a jumbo package that steamrolled most of the Pac-12 (just not Oregon). Skov suffered a season-ending knee injury against Arizona on Sept. 17, but he was the soul of the defense. He'll be healthy in 2012.”
USC, Georgia, South Carolina, West Virginia, Clemson and Wisconsin rounded out Staples’ top 10.
Baseball
An unofficial opening day will precede the real opening day when the Cardinal plays host to its first-ever Cardinal and White intrasquad game on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game, which is free, will be followed by an autograph session. Stanford will enter its true opening day, on Feb. 17 against visiting Vanderbilt, ranked No. 2 by Baseball America. Rankings: No. 2 (Baseball America), No. 3 (Collegiate Baseball).
Men’s Basketball
Stanford will attempt to reverse a stretch of four losses in five games when it travels to the Southland to face UCLA on Thursday and USC on Friday. With all 12 teams making the conference tournament this year, the race is on to gain one of the four top seeds and receive a first-round bye. Stanford is tied for sixth, at 6-5, with UCLA. They are one game behind Oregon and Arizona, which are tied for fourth at 7-4 with seven games left. Records: 16-7, 6-5 Pac-12. Rankings: Unranked.
Women’s Basketball
The sombrero winners for this year are Chiney Ogwumike and Amber Orrange. About 15 years ago, coach Tara VanDerveer added a twist to the Arizona trip by awarding sombreros at the end of the weekend to the team’s top rebounder and shooter (judged by shooting percentage) over the two games. If one player wins both categories, the second-best shooter is usually given the second sombrero. And they must be worn through the check-in and security lines at the airport on the way home. Ogwumike took the rebounding honors with 26 and Orrange was the top shooter, with an .833 percentage (5-for-6). Records: 20-1, 11-0 Pac-12. Rankings: No. 4 (AP, ESPN/USA Today).
Crew
Stanford men’s rowing remains a couple of weeks away from the opening of its spring season, when it plays host to Canada’s University of Victoria on Feb. 25 at Redwood Shores. The lightweight team opens March 10 at the Sacramento Invitational and the women open March 31 at the San Diego Crew Classic.
Fencing
The Cardinal concluded its two-event regular season with the men going 5-4 and the women going 4-8 at the Midwest Invitational in Evanston, Ill., last weekend. The men's qualified 10 and the women eight for the NCAA Regionals, which will be held at Stanford on March 10. Men's Record: 9-6. Women's Record: 9-9. Rankings: Unranked.
Men’s Golf
Andrew Yun’s final round 65 at the Amer Ari Invitational on the Kings’ Course at the Waikoloa Beach Resort matched his career low round, shot in the third round of last year’s Prestige, a tournament he won at PGA West. Yun began his round with back-to-back eagles and collected his third eagle of the day on his 17th hole. Ranking: No. 5 (Golfweek).
Women’s Golf
Mariko Tumangan, a freshman out of Presentation High School in San Jose, was Stanford's top finisher at the Wildcat Invitational in Oro Valley, Ariz., during a tournament that ended Tuesday. Tumangan tied for 12th after a final round 74 left her seven-over for the tournament at 223. The tournament opened the spring season, but extended Tumangan’s streak of leading Stanford golfers to three consecutive events. Ranking: No. 42 (Golfweek).
Men’s Gymnastics
On April 15, 2011, Stanford captured its 100th NCAA championship when the Cardinal men’s gymnastics team edged Oklahoma, 363.450-361.600 in Columbus, Ohio. Stanford opens against No. 1-ranked Northwestern, the defending national champion, on Friday (7 p.m.) at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium, with both teams staying afterward to sign autographs. Stanford first-year assistant Danielle Spencer will coach against the school she played for, earning All-America honors. On Saturday in a noon game at Cagan, San Diego State will play its first-ever game, against Ohio State. San Diego State is coached by former Stanford assistant Kylee White. On Sunday at 3 p.m., Stanford plays host to No. 18 Ohio State. Ranking: No. 6 (IWLCA).

Defending champion Florida is ranked No. 1 and 2010 champ Stanford is No. 2. Records: 2-0, 1-0 Pac-12.

Cuffe ran 9:15.56 to finish a close second to teammate Kathy Kroeger, but set the mark, giving Stanford runners both the American junior records in the event, with Chris Derrick holding the boys’ mark of 7:56.31, set in 2009. Men's Indoor Ranking: No. 7 (USTFCCCA). Women's Indoor Ranking: No. 23 (USTFCCCA).
