The Farm Report: Three Cardinal Projected High in NFL Draft

This week's live Stanford TV, radio and webcast schedule listed below

Jan. 24, 2012

STANFORD, Calif. - Football National Letter of Intent Signing Day will take place on Wednesday. Once the letters have been confirmed by the compliance department, Stanford's recruits will be first announced via Twitter @stanfordfball. GoStanford.com also will provide comprehensive coverage with a Signing Day Central site, complete with bio information, photos and video highlights of Stanford's signees. Head coach David Shaw's press conference will be streamed live on GoStanford.com at a time to be announced.

With the NFL Draft three months away, there are no shortages of mock drafts being conducted on-line. A panel of experts on NFL.com projects three Stanford players - Andrew Luck, Jonathan Martin and David DeCastro - will be selected in the first round. All five panelists project the Indianapolis Colts will select Luck will be the No. 1 overall pick. Eliott Harrison projects Martin to be selected by the Miami Dolphins with the ninth pick and lists DeCastro going to the Buffalo Bills with the 10th. Steve Wyche of NFL.com has DeCastro at No. 9 on his draft board.

Draft expert Mel Kiper, Jr. lists Luck as the No. 1 quarterback prospect and DeCastro as the top offensive guard in the draft. Kiper lists Martin as the No. 3 offensive tackle behind Matt Kalil of USC and Riley Reiff of Iowa, and Coby Fleener as the third best tight end prospect behind DeWayne Allen of Clemson and Orson Charles of Georgia.

The last time Stanford had more than one player selected in the first round of the NFL Draft was in 1992, when Bob Whitfield and Tommy Vardell were selected back-to-back by the Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns, respectively.

Baseball
Stanford is ranked No. 2 in the Baseball America preseason Top 25, which was released Tuesday. The Cardinal (35-22 last year) sits behind Florida with defending champion South Carolina at No. 3. The rankings were determined by the staff of Baseball America. Other Pac-12 teams in the rankings are Arizona (No. 5), UCLA (No. 14), Arizona State (No. 17), and Oregon State (No. 23). Stanford opens its season with a three-game home series against No. 10 Vanderbilt, beginning Feb. 17 (5:30 p.m.). Rankings: No. 2 (Baseball America), No. 3 (Collegiate Baseball).

Men's Basketball
After a week in which he made 15-of-21 attempts from the floor, senior Josh Owens bumped his team-best field goal percentage mark to 60.9 percent, which ranks eighth in the nation. Owens finished a perfect 8-for-8 against Washington State on Jan. 19, representing the fourth game this season Owens has recorded at least eight field goals. He is averaging 13.1 points and 6.3 rebounds, leading the Cardinal in both categories. Records: 15-5 overall, 5-3 Pac-12. Ranking: Unranked.

Women's basketball
Junior forward Joslyn Tinkle stepped up with yet another solid effort in Thursday night's 75-41 win over Washington State. Against the Cougars, Tinkle, making her third consecutive start, scored eight points with nine rebounds and passed out four assists. She also made her presence felt on the defensive end, making three steals and blocking a pair of shots. Tinkle had proven herself one of the best reserve posts in the country, and is averaging 7.7 points and 4.8 rebounds a game while shooting 46.9 percent from the field. Records: 17-1, 8-0 Pac-12. Rankings: No. 4 (AP, ESPN/USA Today).

Men's Golf
Dodge Kemmer '09 earned finished second at the Asian Tour Qualifying School's Final Stage tournament last weekend in Cha Am, Thailand. Kemmer carded rounds of 66-70-69-71 to finish -12 (276) for the tournament, two strokes behind medalist David Lipskey. The top 40 finishers earned their playing cards for the 2012 Asian Tour.

Stanford, ranked No. 7 by Golfweek, opens its spring schedule Feb. 1-3 at the Hawaii-Hilo Invitational at Waikaloa-Kings Course. The Cardinal's projected lineup is Patrick Rodgers, Andrew Yun, Steven Kearney, David Chung and Cameron Wilson, with Patrick Grimes will play as an individual. Ranking: No. 7 (GolfWeek).

Men's gymnastics
Stanford rebounded from a season-opening loss to Cal by gaining a measure of revenge during a home-opening 345.200-340.450 dual-meet victory over the Golden Bears on Saturday. Of course, revenge and bragging rights are all relative considering that Stanford and Cal could go against each other nine times this season, including Saturday at the Stanford Open at Burnham Pavilion. Ranking: No. 6.

Women's gymnastics
Highly-decorated Ivana Hong made her collegiate debut on Sunday in Stanford's 195.925-195.725 dual-meet victory over Washington at Burnham Pavilion. Hong, who has been limited by an ankle injury, was the third vaulter for Stanford and scored a 9.80 in her only event. Hong is a two-time U.S. senior elite national champion (beam and vault in 2009) and won a bronze medal on the beam at the 2009 World Championships in London. Ranking: No. 12.

Lacrosse
Stanford's roster has gone from an almost-entirely Eastern representation to a much more regional one. In Amy Bokker's first season as coach, in 2009, Stanford's 29-player roster included only one player from west of the Mississippi and none from California. This year's 23-player roster includes 10 from west of the Mississippi, five from California, and four from the Bay Area. From 2000-09, only four Californians had played at Stanford, and only one - Kim Cahill of Stockton (2000-2004) - was a prominent player.

Men's Swimming
Stanford split the weekend, using its freshman class to sweep Arizona State, before being edged by No. 1 Arizona. The Cardinal freshman won 12 of 13 events on Friday to easily defeat winless ASU. On Saturday, in a top-three battle, freshman diver Kristian Ipsen kept the Cardinal close with wins in the 1- and 3-meters. Chad La Tourette nearly saw his long-distance dual win streak end, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle easily before charging from behind over the final 25 yards to win the 500 free. La Tourette has lost just one long distance dual event in his career (23-1) and has won 21 straight. Ipsen has won his first 10 collegiate meets.

Women's Swimming
Stanford moved to 6-1 on the season following wins over No. 24 Arizona State and No. 5 Arizona this past weekend. Maya DiRado won two events apiece on both days as Stanford used six consecutive victories on Friday over the Sun Devils to begin the winning weekend and then slowly pulled ahead midway through the meet to upset Arizona.

Men's Tennis
Senior Ryan Thacher was named the Bank of the West Pac-12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Jan. 16-22. Forced to open the season without the services of two-time All-American and top singles player Bradley Klahn, Thacher stepped up his game and led Stanford to a pair of victories over the weekend. Thacher, playing just his second career match at the No. 1 spot of the lineup and first since 2010, rallied past Japie De Klerk 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 to provide the clinching victory in Stanford's 4-3 win over No. 23 Tulsa. The following day in a 5-2 triumph over No. 20 North Carolina, Thacher cruised past No. 30 Jose Hernandez 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 and also won his doubles match with John Morrissey on court one, securing the doubles point for the Cardinal. Ranking: No. 6 (ITA).

Greg Hirshman, class of '11, was selected as the 2012 Marty Glickman Outstanding Jewish Scholastic Athlete (male) of the Year by the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame & Museum. The award will be presented at the 20th annual induction ceremony, to be held April 29 at the Suffolk Y JCC in Commack, N.Y.

Men's Track and Field
Geoffrey Tabor continues his improvement over his Stanford career, specifically in the shot put. Despite the discus being his best event, Tabor has made strides in the shot put, particularly during the indoor season when the discus is not contested. On Saturday, Tabor earned a career best in the shot put (58-6 ¾), which ranks third on the Stanford all-time indoor list. Indoor Ranking: No. 7 (USTFCCCA).

Women's Track and Field
Sophomores Kori Carter and Katie Nelms are quickly establishing themselves as an elite duo in the hurdles. Carter already owns every hurdling school record at Stanford, but Nelms is not far behind. Saturday, Carter improved her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles to 8.31, but Nelms ran 8.33, which matched the old record. Indoor Ranking: No. 24 (USTFCCCA).

Men's volleyball
Stanford coach John Kosty may have flashbacks to the 2010 final four when the Cardinal plays Penn State and Ohio State this weekend for the first time since beating those teams to capture the national championship. Stanford is playing in the Dunlap Tournament at St. John Arena, the site of Stanford's 1997 NCAA title match victory, in Columbus, Ohio. Records: 4-1, 2-1 MPSF. Rankings: No. 4 (AVCA, Volleyball Magazine).

Wrestling
Stanford has won four of its past five dual matches heading into this weekend's contest against Pac-12 foe Oregon State. The Cardinal and the Beavers are tied for 20th in the latest InterMat rankings. Stanford boasts the top wrestler in the nation at 174 pounds, senior two-time All-America Nick Amuchastegui, and junior 133-pounder Ryan Mango, ranked eighth nationally. OSU has five wrestlers ranked in the top 20 of their weight classes, led by No. 4 Mike Mangrum at 141 pounds and No. 5 Clayton Jack at heavyweight. Ranking: No. 20 (InterMat).

Women's Water Polo
Defending national champion Stanford opens its season Saturday at the eight-team Speedo Invitational at Cal. Stanford, the nation's preseason No. 1 team, opens against Loyola Marymount at 10:30 a.m. before playing UC Davis at 4:30 p.m. in its only two games. Ranking: No. 1 (CWPA).
