Cardinal Commitment: Evan Moore Chat Wrap
Sophomore wide receiver answered questions beginning at 1:00 pm, PT.
Stanford, Calif. - Sophomore wide receiver Evan Moore made an appearance in the gostanford.com chat room this Thursday, September 23 (1:00 pm, PT) to continue a series of weekly chats with Cardinal football players throughout the 2004 season. The chat series is one element of the in-depth, detailed and exclusive coverage of the 2004 Stanford Football team featured on the Cardinal Commitment page of gostanford.com. Other features on the page include press releases, a behind the scenes look at the Stanford Athletics Department staff, promotion and ticket information, Buddy Teevens' press conferences, player reports, assistant coaching reports, and of course, Gameday Central every Saturday for all Stanford Football games.
Moore has been one of the favorite clutch targets of Cardinal quarterback Trent Edwards during the victories over San Jose State and Brigham Young early in the 2004 campaign. He leads Stanford with three receiving touchdowns, while catching a total of eight passes for 133 yards and a 16.5 yards per catch average (all second on the club). Moore caught four balls for 77 yards and two touchdowns against the Spartans in the season-opener, followed by four catches for 56 yards and a TD against the Cougars.
As a true freshman in 2003, Moore showed great potential and finished the season with eight catches for 150 yards (18.8 ypc) and a touchdown. His breakout game came at USC when he caught five passes for 52 yards. He also caught a pair of balls for 79 yards and a touchdown versus Arizona State in the eighth game of the year but suffered both shoulder and knee injuries on the second catch (his first career TD on a 33-yarder from quarterback Chris Lewis) that forced him to miss the remainder of the season.
He now has 16 career catches for 283 yards (17.7 ypc) and four touchdowns in the first eight games he has seen action in on The Farm.
Moore was also a freshman on the 2003-04 Stanford men's basketball team that won the Pac-10 title, was ranked No. 1 in the nation for much of the season and finished with a 30-2 overall mark.
The Brea native, an undeclared major at Stanford, spent his prep career at Brea-Olinda High School in the Southland, where he was one of the top two-sport student-athletes in the nation as a senior, earning All-American honors in both football and basketball. In his final prep campaign on the gridiron, Moore caught 37 passes for 867 yards and 12 touchdowns, while adding three picks and 31 tackles as a free safety. He finished his career as a three-time All-Century League wide receiver. In basketball, Moore averaged 24.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game as a senior in 2002-03 to add All-State and All-Century League MVP honors to his All-American selection. He scored 22.0 points per contest as a junior, while adding 12.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game.
Stanford (2-0, 0-0 Pac-10) hosts top-ranked USC (3-0, 0-0 Pac-10) in the Pac-10 opener for both schools at Stanford Stadium on Saturday, September 25 (4:00 pm, PT). The game will be nationally televised live by TBS. Live audio broadcasts can also be heard on KNEW 910-AM, KZSU 90.1 FM and gostanford.com, as well as on the Stanford Football Radio Network (KFIA ... 710 AM, Sacramento ... KPSI 920 AM, Palm Springs ... KUIK 1360 AM, Portland).

| Moderator: Evan is here and ready to start answering your quesitons. |
| San Jose: What was it like being a part of the Men's basketball team and being ranked number 1? |
Evan Moore: It was a great experience. Being with such a great group of guys and being part of such an incredible team was something that I will never forget. I learned a lot from just being around such a great group. |
| Nji Nnamani & Kristin Richards: Hey EVAN, are you a fan of Stanford Volleyball? Good luck this season. |
Evan Moore: Actually, I am a huge fan of stanford volleyball. I have floor seats to the game tonight and will be waiting around afterwards for autographs and pictures. |
| Michael Forrest (Northridge):
Evan, congratulations on a great start thus far. Seems as if every receiver on the team is dramatically improved this year. Can you elaborate on what new WR coach Ken Margerum is doing? Also, can you comment on new OC Bill Cubit?
Thanks, and good luck this week.
Evan Moore: Thank you very much. First off, I would say that coach Margerum has dramatically raised the confidence level in each receiver. It is always a positive environment with him, and everyone feeds off that and seems to play much better. Everyone on the offense greatly respects coach Cubit. We have all bought into his system and fully believe that he can lead us to a championship. |
| Loretta (Annapolis): What is the hardest part of the transition from football to basketball? What do you do individually to help make the switch? |
Evan Moore: I think the hardest part is getting the "basketball legs" back. It is a different sport and requires different conditioning than football. The first time you step out onto the basketball court again you feel like you can barely jump. Individually, I start shooting and running on the court around the beginning of November to start getting the feeling back. It's not too extreme, but it helps a lot. |
| nancy (belmont): do you have time to go to other sporting events at stanford? what's your favorite sport that you don't play? |
Evan Moore: I have plenty of time to go to other sporting events. My favorite sport that I don't play would have to be women's volleyball. |
| jen p (wash dc): you and trent are quite a pair, you have great timing and always seem to know where the other is on the field -- are y'all friends off the field too? |
Evan Moore: We are. Trent and I spent a lot of time together in the off-season as well and thats where the connection comes from. |
| BMiL (Pasadena): As a high school coach, I need to constantly light a fire under my receivers to get them to run-block with as much energy as they run their pass routes. What would you tell a receiving corp is you were their coach? |
Evan Moore: First off, it's good to hear from you
BMil, and how is that Latin degree going for you? I would tell this receiving corps that the running backs will see this and wont try as hard to pick up blitzes to make it possible for them to get receptions. It all comes back around. |
| willy "all-american"cecil yorba linda: I have heard from credible sources that when Stanford plays Oregon St. their cornerbacks are going to lock in on you and deny you the football. If you think you can't be denied the football then are you saying you're better than everybody else? Even ME!? If that's the case I'll tell my daughter to look elsewhere for Mr. Right! I'll see YOU in church....tough guy! WC |
Evan Moore: Cecil, Cecil, Cecil...We will have to wait till Oregon St. week to comment on that subject. But I would never say that I am better than you though Cecil, that's impossible. Good to hear from you! |
| Dan (Brea): Did you drop any passes in practice yesterday? |
Evan Moore: I did...took my eye off it and it went straight through my hands. Don't worry though, it won't happen again. |
| Davis: Have the coaches and the team approached this week differently in practice because you are going to face the #1 team in teh nation? |
Evan Moore: No. Our coaches approach every game the same...with emphasis on the team and preparing us to play a great game no matter who we are playing. However, the players are a little more "ready" becuase of the opportunity we have here. |
| Your Brea Buds: Congratulations on a great start...what are you most looking forwad to for the game on Saturday? and just letting you know...everyone here at home is rootin for you. good luck. |
Evan Moore: Thank you. I would have to say I am most looking forward to getting out there with the boys and showing the country how hard we have worked in preparation for this season. |
| Ryan: Can you comment on the potential matchup between you and your brother when the stanford basketball team plays UC Davis? |
Evan Moore: Sure...my brother Ryan is a dangerous player. There is really nothing he can't do on the floor, so I would have to switch off and tell someone else to guard him...he's just too good. |
| Fletcher Reed Brea,CA: What do you think of moving Derek Belch out to WR? I understand he has great hands and shows a lot of potential after practice. Good Luck against SC |
Evan Moore: Oh Yeah.... Belch....well, I would say that would be a great move. He is a pure athlete and seeing him run routes with Trent after practice just makes me envy his talent. He is a freak athlete. |
| Megan (Los gatos): Hey Evan, has the number change from 40 to 8 improved your game? and out of curiousity, if you had bad service at a restaurant, what do you tip? also, do you like the PizzuKIKI? |
Evan Moore: The change from 40 to 8 has improved my game. I feel different (better) in number 8 and that translates to a better performance. Also, a waiter is not entitled to a tip, so if I had bad service then I would make sure to put $0.00 on the tip line. No comment on your last question. |
| Janice (San Ramon): How much is the is the team's morale pumped after two straight wins, and now going in to one of the toughest games of the season? |
Evan Moore: The first two wins were big, and it gave our offense a lot to be excited about. This team has plenty of confidence and no doubts at all about our potential. |
| Aggie Fanatic: I have heard your brother is a pretty good college basketball player. What have you learned from your brother and how has it affected you? |
Evan Moore: I have learned what hard work is from my brother. He has had to struggles with injuries but has not let it get him down...he has heart. |
| David Moore (Sturgeon Bay WI): Are you concerned this year as a starter with the football season effecting basketball season? |
Evan Moore: Whats up Dave? No, I am not concerned because all i have to do is what is in my control, and that is prepare myself for basketball toward the end of football. Right now though all I can think about is football. |
| Claire Sokol from Brea: Hi cosin Evan!!!!! |
Evan Moore: Hi Claire!!! |
| Joe: Many people say this team is different than the last two year's teams. Can you comment on that and why you think the team will do much better this year? |
Evan Moore: I would say the first thing that pops in my mind is the confidence level. Everyone believes. Also, I believe this team is more well-conditioned and prepared for this season than any other. |
| Ryan: What is your favorite restaurant in Palo Alto and how often do you eat out for dinner? |
Evan Moore: My favorite restaurant is either Sundance or P.F. Changs. I probably eat out 3-4 nights a week. |
| Jake the Tank (Davis): When deciding wheree to go to school was UC Davis in your top five....and have you ever jumped off the highest platform into the swimming pool? |
Evan Moore: Whats up Jake? I have yet to jump off the highest platform in the pool, but someday I will do it at four in the morning. |
| Bill (San Francisco): Forget beating USC. Are you guys finally going to gain a victory over Cal in 2004? What do you think the keys to success will be in not only beating Cal, but rising to the top of the Pac-10 and making the trip to Pasadena on New Years' Day? Go Stanford!!! |
Evan Moore: This team has the talent and the coaching to do anything this season. Obvioulsy health is a big key, but as part of the offense we take a lot of responsibility in putting points on the board. We have full faith in our defense, and a well-balanced team will be very successful. |
| John, Netherlands: Evan, in your profile i read that you're Mexican. Can you explain that. |
Evan Moore: Over 25% and very proud of it! |
| Scott (Thousand Oaks): Is it your goal to play ball in the NFL or pursue some other venture? |
Evan Moore: My goal is to play in the NFL, but that is not always possible, so I hope to have other options as well. |
| Marshall (San Diego): Let's be honest ... before the season started, you must've set a goal for TDs. What was it? |
Evan Moore: I did, and when the season is over I will let you know if I made it. |
| Suzi: I've heard you have a big family. Do they come up to see you a lot? |
Evan Moore: I have huge family, and they come up to all the games. I am very fortunate to have all of this support. |
| Derek (San Francisco): Evan: You've got some long arms and mad hops. Who is your favorite two-sport star, and when will we get to see you dunk over the cross-bar? GO CARDINAL! |
Evan Moore: My favorite two-sport star is probaly Tony Gonzalez. The dunk over the cross-bar will have to wait till later days, they have really cut down in college on what can be done after TD's. |
Evan Moore: Thanks for all the questions and support. I have to go to practice now. See you all soon. |
