Cardinal Commitment: David Bergeron Chat Wrap

Senior inside linebacker David Bergeron made an appearance in the gostanford.com chat room this Thursday, September 2 (11:30 am, PT) to continue a series of weekly chats with Cardinal football players throughout the 2004 season. The chat series is one element of the in-depth, detailed and exclusive coverage of the 2004 Stanford Football team featured on the Cardinal Commitment page of gostanford.com. Other features on the page include press releases, a behind the scenes look at the Stanford Athletics Department staff, promotion and ticket information, Buddy Teevens' press conferences, player reports, assistant coaching reports, and of course, Gameday Central every Saturday for all Stanford Football games.

As a junior in 2003, Bergeron started all 11 games and was third on the club with 66 total tackles on his way to honorable mention All-Pac-10 and Second Team Pac-10 All-Academic honors. He also accounted for five tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, three pass breakups and his first career interception. Bergeron twice recorded a career-high-tying 10 tackles in a game (at USC, 10/11; vs. California, 11/22).

Bergeron started the final 10 games of his sophomore season in 2002, finishing the campaign with 38 tackles, six and a half tackles for loss, and one and a half quarterback sacks.

He made his collegiate debut as a redshirt freshman in 2001, playing in nine contests.

Bergeron is currently working on both a Master's degree in Communication and a Bachelor's in Public Policy at Stanford. A native of Lake Oswego, Oregon, he prepped at Lakeridge High School.

Stanford will begin its 2004 football season by hosting San Jose State this Saturday, September 4 (7:00 pm, PT). The game will be televised live by KRON (Channel 4) and can also be heard on KNEW 910-AM and gostanford.com.

The Cardinal is currently preparing for the season-opener on campus with preseason workouts taking place on the Football Practice Field adjacent to the Avery Aquatic Center. The workouts are scheduled every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and are free of charge and open to the public unless otherwise specified. The Cardinal normally hits the field at approximately 3:50 pm.

Moderator: David Bergeron has arrived and is ready to begin answering questions for his chat.

Michael Forrest (Northridge, CA): David... Congratulations on a great career so far -- Stanford fans are proud of you. My question is about the new defense you're running. Can it (A) hold up and stop the run, and (B) find a way to sack/pressure the QB. Best of luck this year.
David: Our new defense is something that we are very excited about. It gives us the option of bringing a blitz off either side. Against the run we have some great players on our defensive line that will do a good job containing the run. Both Jon Alston and Jared Newberry are very active and explosive players on the edges of our defense and we hope that they will be successfull in putting preasure on the QB.

GeoJake (Tampa, FL): Hey Berge, Do you have any clever sack dances in mind for this coming season? I know two years ago you had a great sack dance you performed against UCLA. Any comments?
David: Jakester- Always good to hear from you. Good luck with you wedding. Sadly the Pac-10 is cracking down on celebrations this year, and a sack dance will be flagged for 15 yards. The sack dance is something that has been layed to rest along with the mystery RB.

Suz (portland): What are you looking forward to the most about your final year at Stanford
David: Whats up Suz! I am looking forward to winning this year. Our team is eager to start the season and show the country what kind of team Stanford has this season.

Chris Moneymaker (Las Vegas): David- First of all, I want to tell you how big a fan I am of you. My two boys play pop warner ball out here in Nevada and each year beg to be the number 48 in honor of you. I could of gone to Stanford after high school but a serious sledding injury kept me from continuing my career. I know Gordon Ceresino holds to all-time record for tackles at 527. Are you anywhere near breaking this record? If not do you think this record is beatable? Good luck against the Spartans. Go Cardinal!
David: Mr. Moneymaker- I want to start off by congratulating you on a great showing in the 2003 world series. As far as Ceresino's tackle record goes I don't forsee anyone ever breaking that record. He was an incredible player and 527 tackles is incredible. Say hello to your boys for me. Go Cardinal!

DCay (pittsburgh): David, I was hoping i could get an update on your progress as a long snapper. Any long snappers in particular you try and model yourself after? Good luck this season!
David: That is a great question becasue it was actually under the tutelage of Drew Caylor that I first started snapping. Ever since he showed me the trade secrets it has been getting better and better. Thanks DCay!

Elise (SF): What has been your favorite thing about being a student-athlete at Stanford?
David: Without question meeting my wonderful girlfriend.

Brian B (Dundee, OR): David, I've been a big fan of yours and the Standford program for a long time. As a fifth year senior what are your persoanl goals for yourself in the last year of your college fooptball career?
David: Goals this year for me all revolve around the success of our team. We want to win, that is the single most important thing about our upcoming season. If we can do that everthing else will take care of itself. We have a number of guys trying to get to the NFL next year which is great. But everyone understands the only way any of us are going to get there is through the success of our team as a whole.

diane (portland): whats your forcast for U of O this fall
David: U of O always fields a great team. I am sure they will do the same this year. We are just excited that for the first time in my career we get to play the Ducks down here in our house. Autzen is an incredible place to play and the fans to a great job of making that a difficult environment for an opposing team to come into. So were looking forward to seeing the ducks head south for once.

Jess (NYC): How does it feel to have fans all over the country? Will that be a critical factor in your performance this season?
David: Hey Jess! Knowing that the cardinal have fans all accross the country is a great feeling. Consistency will be the critical factor for us this season.

PAUL BELMONT: DAVI LET'S GO ALL THE WAY TO ROSE BOWL THE CARDINAL ARE #1 INTO THE NATION LET'S GO STANFORD CARDINALS
David: I like it. Let's do it. Thanks for the support Paul!

Russ (portland): It has been great watching you play football. You seem to have a real love for the game. When the OSB are blitzing who will be covering the short pass?
David: Thanks Russ, playing football for me is a real pleasure and I do love it. As far as when we are blitzing, the coverage is different for all of out blitzes. Sometimes it's me other times it could be a safety, you just never know.

NUT (palo alto): Why ohhh why is your head so large? Please answer my question berge. LOL
David: That is and interesting question NUT! My Dad has a pretty big noggin so I guess I got it from him. It does work for my advantage when I have to take a fullback "head" on. lol

Seamus (South San Francisco): Do you see the linebacking corps (with you and Newberry) as the defensive leaders of the squad?
David: Newberry and I along with all the seniors on defensive have taken different roles pertaining to leadership. Every role being crucial in our success and cohesiveness as a defensive unit and as a team.

Cath (LHS): David What is your goal this year for sacks? Go Cardinal!
David: Whats up Cath! I don't have a numerical goal for how many sacks I want to get this year. It all depends on how much I blitz. I just want to make sure that when I am in a position to make a big play, like a sack or an interception that I capitalize on those opportunities. I can't control how many of those opportunities I will have this season but I hopefully can control their outcome when they are presented.

SC Trojan Guy (Los Angeles Teezloe):: How do you see Stanford Stacking up against the incredible SC Trojan Squad? How do you think the 9 returners on defense are going to match up against the trojans offense?
David: Bro- I know that your Trojans are looking solid this fall and have a lot of firepower on the offensive side of the ball. But we are certainly looking forward to playing USC and excited about the chance to play the #1 team in the country. That is a challenge every competitor waits for.

BMiL (Pasadena): hello David, what is the most important lesson you've learned from the current defensive staff?
David: That consistency and effort the the Intangibles that seperate good teams from great teams.

Derek (San Francisco): Hey David! What gives you a bigger rush? Sack, interception, causing a fumble, 3-down stop, or just knocking somebody flat out? Good luck and GO CARDINAL!
David: As a linebacker you are always looking for that big hit. That is the ultimate rush.

Tommy (Grand View): Do you see yourself playing professionally when your collegiate days are over?
David: Playing professionally is a dream of mine that I have been working towards ever since I started playing football. I would love to have that opportunity.

Sean (Hermosa Beach): David how do you feel the mix of seniors and underclassman in the Defense will help the team not just this year but also down the line?
David: I think that the mix of seniors and underclassmen has created a great oppotunity for communication and mentoring to go on. As a young guy there is so much to learn and having older guys helping teach and assisting any way they can is only going to make the Stanford program better in the long run.
David: Thanks so much for chatting with me, I look forward to seeing everyone this weekend. Go Cardinal!
