Freshman driver Jamie Neushul was named MPSF/KAP 7 Newcomer of the Week by the conference after a standout weekend during the top-ranked Cardinal’s away sweep of No. 2 UCLA and Cal State Bakersfield.

It is the first newcomer of the week honor for Neushul, and the first by a Cardinal player this season.

Friday against the second-ranked Bruins, Neushul’s defense helped the Cardinal pull out the 9-8 victory and take the driver’s seat in the race for the top seed at the MPSF Championship. One of Neushul’s top defensive plays came in the fourth period with the game tied 7-7. UCLA, on the 6-on-5, moved in on the Cardinal goal but Neushul made a key field block near the post and came up with possession. In a matter of seconds, she played the ball back to goalie Gabby Stone, who found Kaley Dodson open out ahead of the scrum, allowing Dodson to score in transition which gave the Cardinal an 8-7 lead, a change in momentum and a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way.

The next day, Neushul scored twice as the Cardinal defeated Cal State Bakersfield 19-6 to clinch the top seed at the MPSF Championship, which is set for April 25-27 in Los Angeles.

Stanford (19-1, 5-0 MPSF) hosts California in the Big Splash this Saturday at 5 p.m., a game which will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network. The Cardinal also receives a bye into the MPSF Championship semifinals, set for Saturday, April 26, where it will play the winner of April 25’s matchup between the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds.
