No. 2 Stanford women's water polo (7-0) heads out onto the road once again this weekend, traveling to Irvine to compete in the 16-team UCI Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
Stanford heads Group B, which also consists of No. 7 Arizona State, No. 11 San Jose State and Pacific. The Cardinal opens the draw Saturday at 8 a.m. against Pacific (4-7) at Corona del Mar High School. A win would send Stanford into the second round of the winner's bracket, where at 2:15 p.m. it would face the winner of Saturday morning's other Group B contest between Arizona State (6-3) and San Jose State (11-5). The loser of Stanford's morning contest will play the Arizona State-San Jose State loser at 3:30 p.m. at Corona del Mar High School.
USC, Stanford, UCLA and California are the top four seeds in the draw and head Groups A, B, C and D, respectively. A Saturday sweep puts each group winner into Sunday's semifinals at UC Irvine.
The Cardinal has opened the 2014 campaign 7-0, and defeated this Saturday's first opponent, Pacific, last Saturday in Stockton by a score of 15-4. Senior two-meter Annika Dries was named MPSF/KAP 7 Player of the Week Monday for her performance over Stanford's 3-0 road effort last week. Dries scored 12 goals over wins at Santa Clara, Pacific and UC Davis, capping the week with six goals on six shots in Saturday night's 17-5 win over the Aggies. On the year, she leads the Cardinal with 19 goals.
Kiley Neushul (16 goals), Anna Yelizarova (14) and Ashley Grossman (13) are also over the 10-goal mark, pacing a Cardinal attack which averages 14.14 goals a game. In the cage, goalies Gabby Stone, Emily Dorst and Julia Hermann organize a defense which allows an average of just 5.14 goals a game.
