The FINA Junior World Championships came to a close Sunday in Volos, Greece as Cardinal players Ashley Grossman and Kiley Neushul helped lead the USA to a 9-7 win over Spain in the Gold Medal Final.
Grossman opened the scoring as the USA raced out to a 6-2 halftime lead, and Neushul led all players with three goals in the contest. For the tournament, Grossman scored 12 times while Neushul found the net on 11 occasions over the USA's perfect 6-0 run to the gold medal.
The USA raced through group play, outscoring Kazakhstan, Italy and New Zealand by a combined 34-14 to earn a bye into the quarterfinal round. There, the USA defeated Hungary, 12-10, then routed host Greece 10-3 to reach the final.
Stanford sophomore Gurpreet Sohi also participated in the tournament, helping Canada to a ninth-place finish. After dropping its first two games, Team Canada rebounded to rout Ukraine, 21-1, in consolation qualifying then defeated New Zealand, 12-9, behind three goals by Sohi in the ninth-place game.
