THIS WEEK: The No. 9 Stanford men’s volleyball team (8-5, 5-5 MPSF) plays host to No. 5 UC Santa Barbara (8-3, 7-3 MPSF) on Friday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. and No. 3 UCLA (11-3, 8-2 MPSF) on Monday, Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. PT in Maples Pavilion.

SCOUTING UC SANTA BARBARA: UCSB enters the week with an 8-3 overall record and a 7-3 mark in the MPSF, tied for third. The Gauchos, who are outhitting opponents .249 to .197, are coming off a four-set win over No. 6 Long Beach State. Junior Austin Kingi paces the squad with 3.09 kills and 1.58 digs per set. Sophomore setter Jonah Seif controls the offense with 10.07 assists per set, while senior opposite Evan Licht adds 2.93 kills per set. Junior middle blocker Jake Staahl is hitting .388 and posting 1.43 blocks per set.

SCOUTING UCLA: The third-ranked Bruins enter the week 11-3 overall and in second place in the MPSF with an 8-2 conference record. The Bruins are hitting .317 as a team and averaging 2.31 blocks and 1.48 aces per set. Senior Robart Page leads the team with 4.38 kills per set on a .333 attack percentage. Senior outside hitter Gonzalo Quiroga adds 3.60 kills per set and 2.00 digs per set. Junior Michael Beals and sophomore Steve O’Dell have split time at setter, each posting over 10.00 assists per set.

LAST WEEK: Stanford split its matches last week, sweeping Pacific on the road before falling in five sets to visiting BYU. Senior Brian Cook averaged 4.62 kills, 5.18 points and 2.12 digs per set. Senior Steven Irvin added 3.50 kills per set and tied his career high with six aces against the Tigers.

IN THE POLL: Stanford dropped to No. 9 in the latest AVCA Division I-II Men’s Coaches Poll after splitting its two MPSF matches last week. The Cardinal is one of 10 MPSF teams ranked in the top 15 with eight appearing in the top 10.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS: As a team, Stanford ranks among the top-10 in the nation in hitting percentage (.323 - 3rd), kills per set (13.20 - 9th), digs per set (9.44 - 10th), aces per set (1.64 - 4th) and assists per set (12.32 - 9th). Individually, setter James Shaw is 10th nationally with 10.38 assists per set. Senior Steven Irvin comes in at No. 12 with 0.44 aces per set, No. 19 with a .340 hitting percentage and ranks 20th with 3.52 kills per set, while redshirt junior Grant Delgado is 20th with 2.27 digs per set.

HEAD COACH JOHN KOSTY: Stanford head coach John Kosty is in his eighth season at the helm of the Cardinal program and his 24th overall on staff. He is 129-87 in his career and guided Stanford to the 2010 NCAA national championship. The Cardinal has produced a first team AVCA All-America selection in each of the past six seasons under Kosty.
