Stanford Hosts UCSD, UCI

THIS WEEK: The seventh-ranked Stanford men’s volleyball team (5-4, 2-4 MPSF) will play host to UC San Diego (0-9, 0-8 MPSF) on Friday, Feb. 7 and UC Irvine (6-6, 3-5 MPSF) on Saturday, Feb. 8. The Cardinal will take on the Tritons at 7 p.m. PT and the Anteaters at 12:30 p.m. PT in Maples Pavilion.

SCOUTING UC SAN DIEGO: UC San Diego enters the week still in search of its first win of the season. The Tritons are being out hit by opponents .381 to .162. UCSD is led by senior opposite Johl Awerkamp’s 2.71 kills per set, while senior outside hitter Nick Iorfino adds 2.45 kills and 1.14 digs per set. The Tritons have utilized two setters in junior Garrett Dempsey (7.60 aps) and senior Matthew Schnitzer (5.32 aps).

SCOUTING UC IRVINE: UC Irvine, which is 6-6 overall and 3-5 in the MPSF, will play at Pacific on Friday before taking onthe Cardinal. The Anteaters are hitting .290 as a team and averaging 1.34 aces per set and 2.50 blocks per set. UCI is led by junior Zack La Cavera who is notching 3.49 kills and 1.27 digs per set on a .305 attack percentage. Freshman Tamir Hershko is averaging 3.21 kills per set, while senior middle blocker Collin Mehring is hitting .445 with 1.40 kills and a team-best 1.28 blocks per set.

LAST WEEK: Stanford split its two matches last weekend, falling in five sets to No. 6 Long Beach State before sweeping No. 13 Cal State Northridge. Seniors Brian Cook and Steven Irvin combined for 29 of the team’s 58 kills against the 49ers on Friday, while redshirt junior Grant Delgado matched his season-high with 18 digs. Against the Matadors, senior Eric Mochalski made his first start of the season at opposite and led the team with 11 kills on a .688 attack percentage.

IN THE POLL: Stanford remained at No. 7 in the latest AVCA Division I-II Men’s Coaches Poll. The Cardinal is one of 10 MPSF teams ranked in the top-15 with eight appearing in the top 10.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS: As a team, Stanford ranks among the top-10 in the nation in hitting percentage (.317 - 5th), kills per set (13.11 - 10th), digs per set (9.50 - 9th) and assists per set (12.22 - 10th). Individually, setter James Shaw is eighth nationally with 10.61 assists per set. Senior Steven Irvin comes in at No. 16 with 3.56 kills per set, while redshirt junior Grant Delgado is sixth with 2.72 digs per set.

HEAD COACH JOHN KOSTY: Stanford head coach John Kosty is in his eighth season at the helm of the Cardinal program and his 24th overall on staff. He is 126-86 in his career and guided Stanford to the 2010 NCAA national championship. The Cardinal has produced a first team AVCA All-America selection in each of the past six seasons under Kosty.
