SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Stanford men's volleyball team opened the 2014 season on Friday at the 50th ASICS UCSB Tournament in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Cardinal went 1-3 in Pool A play and will face UCLA in the seventh-place match on Saturday.

In the best-of-three matches, Stanford dropped a 29-27, 25-20 decision to Harvard, which will be playing in the championship match against Long Beach State. The Cardinal then rebounded against Pacific, 25-22, 25-19, to close out the morning session.

In the afternoon, Stanford pushed both Cal Baptist and host UCSB to the limit. However, the Cardinal came up short in both three-set matches. Stanford fell to CBU, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12, and to UCSB, 25-22, 24-26, 15-8.

“So far, it has been a good tournament for us despite the outcomes,” said head coach John Kosty. “We got a lot of guys some good playing time against good competition. Both setters [James Shaw and Joe Ctvrtlik] got some good work in for us today.”

Harvard won Pool A with a 3-1 record and nine points overall according to the tournament’s point system (3 points for 2-0 win, 2 points for 2-1 win, 1 point for 1-2 loss, 0 points for 0-2 loss). UCSB (8 points) finished second also going 3-1, while Cal Baptist (6 points) was third with a 3-1 mark. Stanford finished with five points and Pacific had two at 0-4.

Long Beach State went undefeated in Pool B and tallied 11 points overall. UC San Diego (2-2) and IPFW (2-2) both finished with six points, but the Tritons won the head-to-head battle to earn a spot in the third-place match on Saturday. UCLA went 2-2 and registered five points, while Cal State Northridge (0-4) secured two points.

“We have our first match of the season tomorrow against UCLA,” stated Kosty. “It’s a very good opponent to start the season off against.”

Friday’s matches will not count towards the Cardinal’s overall season record as it was not NCAA regulation competition. Saturday’s matches will be best-out-of-five and will officially count on the schools’ record. Live stats for the Stanford/UCLA match can be found here.
