IZMIR, Turkey – Stanford setter James Shaw is no stranger to international competition.

The sophomore played on the U.S. Youth National Team that finished 11th at the 2011 FIVB Boys’ Youth World Championships in Argentina and won the bronze at the Under-19 Pan American Cup in Mexicali, Mexico.

This week, Shaw and the U.S. team will travel to Turkey and compete at the 2013 FIVB Men’s U21 Volleyball World Championships.

The 17th installment of the event takes place in Ankara and Izmir from Aug. 22-Sept. 1 and features 20 teams.

The contest begins with four pools of five teams competing in a round-robin format.

The U.S. will join Serbia, Tunisia, Canada and Rwanda in Pool C, with its first match against Rwanda at 2 a.m. PST on Aug. 22 in Ataturk Sports Hall.

After round one, the bottom-ranked team in each pool falls into a classification bracket for 17th-20th place.

The top 16 teams advance to playoff where the top ranked team in one pool will play the bottom-ranked team in another. The losers compete in a classification bracket for 9th-16th place, while the winners advance to the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.

In 2011, the U.S. squad notched its highest finish in history, placing 4th at the event in Brazil.

Shaw is fresh off a banner rookie season at Stanford, where the setter was one of only two freshmen to receive All-America honors from Volleyball Magazine.

The Woodside, Calif., native finished 2013 ranked fifth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and seventh in the NCAA with 10.48 assists per set.
