The Field

Stanford
• Stanford will compete in its first traditional dual meet of the 2013-14 season when it faces Indiana at noon (PT) on Saturday at Avery Aquatic Center.

• Stanford opened its season last week with a friendly, non-traditional meet with West Coast neighbor UC Santa Cruz.

• The Cardinal is coming off a campaign in which Kristian Ipsen and David Nolan each earned a pair of individual titles as Stanford finished seventh at the 2013 NCAA Championships.

• Stanford set four school records in 2012-13 under the direction of (then) first-year head coach Ted Knapp.

Indiana
• Indiana opens its season with a doubleheader against Cal (Oct. 11) and Stanford (Oct. 12).

• The Hoosiers are coming off their first top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships in more than 30 years, placing ninth in 2013.

• Leading the Hoosiers’ returners is seven-time Big Ten champion Cody Miller and Eric Ress, who was runner-up in the 100 and 200 back at the 2011 NCAA Championships.

Cardinal Clips

• Stanford (8) and Indiana (6) have combined for 14 NCAA titles.

• Diver Kristen Ipsen was the highest American finisher (12th) in 3-meter (413.35) at 2013 FINA World Championships.

• David Nolan leads all Cardinal returners with 12 All-America citations to his name. Nolan won the 200 IM and 100 back at the 2013 NCAA Championships.

• Tom Kremer was third in the 200 free (1:33.07) at last season’s NCAA Championships while breaking a 26-year old National Age Group record. Kremer bested the 1:33.28 set by two-time Olympic gold medalist Troy Dalbey in 1987.

• Saturday’s meet will follow a traditional 16-even format.

A Dose From Dr. Dive

Head diving coach Rick Schavone breaks down the matchup with Indiana …

“The Indiana divers are one of the top-five teams in the country, with two divers who are easily All-Americans. Their team is at least a month farther along than we are, as we’ve only been training since the start of school three weeks ago.

“We’ve got a great men’s team. They’re all working really hard and diving really well. Bradley Christensen has been a great addition and has been challenging Kristen Ipsen on the 1-meter. But Kristen always carries that top level with him in everything he does.

“We’ve had some very competitive practices. It’s a very competitive environment and we hope that carries over into our meets.”
