MOUNT IRVINE, Tobago – Stanford freshman Sean McGorty won the North American, Central American and Caribbean Men's Junior Cross Country Championship at Mount Irvine Bay Golf Club on Saturday.
Representing the U.S. junior national team, McGorty won the 6K (3.73-mile) race, with fellow Stanford freshman Sam Wharton earning the bronze medal and teammate Jack Keelan placing fourth. Stanford incoming freshman Steven Fahy reportedly was sixth.
A week ago, McGorty led a 1-2-3 Stanford sweep at the U.S. junior championships last week in Boulder, with Keelan edging Wharton for second.
McGorty, an All-West Region selection for Stanford, was a member of the Cardinal team that finished 19th at the NCAA Championships and won the NCAA West Regional. Keelan and Wharton each redshirted in an effort to create a strong training foundation for their collegiate careers. All three are redshirting during the indoor track and field season. They are coached by Chris Miltenberg, Stanford’s Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track and Field.
