WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Stanford men’s rowing team sent its two boats out on to Lake Mercer Saturday for the C/D semifinals at the IRA National Championships.

“Today was a tremendous first step towards next season,” said head coach Craig Amerkhanian. “Both boats did well to advance to the C Final. It is the best we could do and that can give us a sense of accomplishment and task completed for today.”

The varsity eight came out strong and won its semifinal. The Cardinal had the lead from start to finish, holding off No. 14 Penn for a victory. Stanford coasted to the finish line with a time of 6:17.848 in a crosswind to advance on to the C Final on Sunday.

“The plan was to win the thing and we were able to do that today,” said Amerkhanian. “We want to win two six-lane races this weekend and have a chance to do that tomorrow. It will be difficult with us racing all out for the fourth time in three days.”

The second varsity eight also moved on the C final with a third place finish in its race on Saturday. The Cardinal crossed the finish line in 6:31.693, coming in behind No. 16 Dartmouth and No. 18 Syracuse.

“With such a young team, every race our guys compete in is beneficial towards their future,” said Amerkhanian. “Gaining different racing experiences will help them in competitions down the road.”

The second varsity eight C final will begin at 9:50 a.m. tomorrow at Lake Mercer and the varsity eight C final will take place at 12 noon.
