Stanford men’s water polo released its 2014 schedule Thursday, coinciding with the Pac-12 Network’s announcement of its men’s water polo and field hockey broadcast slates. On the men’s water polo side, the Cardinal will have four games televised on the Pac-12 Network in 2014.
The Cardinal finished third at the National Collegiate Championship last year, its first postseason appearance since 2008. Stanford turned in an overall record of 23-6 and went 7-1 in MPSF play, reaching the title game at the MPSF Championship in November. This coming season the Cardinal, with head coach John Vargas entering his 13th season at the helm, will be paced by returning All-Americans Bret Bonanni, who set an MPSF record with 97 goals in 2013, Alex Bowen (71 goals), BJ Churnside (45 goals) and rising sophomore goalie Drew Holland (9.08 saves per game, 7.44 goals-against average).
Stanford opens the 2014 season at Avery Aquatic Center Saturday, Sept, 6 when it hosts Santa Clara. That precedes a weekend of action in Southern California, beginning Sept. 13 at the UCLA Invitational against Concordia then the following day at the Inland Empire Tournament.
The annual NorCal Invitational, at which the Cardinal took third last season, takes place Sept. 20-21 at Pacific, followed by another tournament weekend for Stanford at the Aggie Shootout in Davis from Sept. 27-28. There, the Cardinal will face Chapman, Occicental, Navy, and Whittier.
The first of Stanford’s four games on the Pac-12 Network takes place Saturday, Oct. 4 with the Cardinal hosting UC Irvine at 10:30 a.m. to open MPSF play. The following day Stanford heads east on I-80 for a non-conference contest at UC Davis. The following weekend, Oct. 11-12, brings one final regular-season tournament as the Cardinal travels to Los Angeles for the SoCal Tournament.
Next up will be six straight MPSF matchups, beginning with another home broadcast on the Pac-12 Network Saturday, Oct. 18 as the Cardinal hosts USC in a return match of last season’s MPSF Championship, a 10-8 Trojan win, as well as Stanford’s buzzer-beating 17-16 overtime win in Los Angeles last Nov. 16.
MPSF play continues the next day (Oct. 19) at UC Santa Barbara, and the following Friday, Oct. 24, at UCLA in a matchup broadcast on the Pac-12 Network at 4 p.m. Stanford continues the weekend at Pepperdine on Sunday, Oct. 26, before returning home to host Long Beach State on Nov. 1 at noon.
Stanford’s final Pac-12 Network broadcast will be Saturday, Nov. 8 for the Big Splash at California at a time to be determined. That is the first of three games in eight days for the Cardinal, as it then closes the season with a return game at Santa Clara on Nov. 12 and its home finale Nov. 15 at noon against Pacific. The MPSF Championship is set for Nov. 21-23 at Long Beach State, and the Cardinal will aim to make its second straight appearance at the National Collegiate Championship, set for Dec. 6-7 at UC San Diego.
