Redshirt senior driver Paul Rudolph claimed his first-career MPSF/KAP 7 Player of the Week honor Monday following his standout performance in No. 4 Stanford’s thrilling 17-16 overtime win over No. 2 USC in Los Angeles.
Rudolph scored four goals in the contest, including the game-winner as time expired in overtime. Three of Rudolph’s goals came during overtime, in which both teams combined to score nine goals.
The second of those three goals was also a buzzer-beater. With the Cardinal trailing 15-14 near the end of the first overtime period, Rudolph fired home at the horn to tie things up at 15-15. After USC took a 16-15 lead early in the second session, the Cardinal equalized behind Alex Bowen’s goal, then dug in on defense to set up Rudolph’s heroics.
The win improved the Cardinal to 18-4 overall and to 6-1 in MPSF play, also clinching for the Cardinal a top-three seed in Nov. 29-Dec. 1’s MPSF Tournament in Stockton.Rudolph’s honor is the second for Stanford this season. Freshman goalie Drew Holland claimed the honor on Oct. 21 after Stanford’s 8-6 win over then-No. 2 UCLA.
