Freshman goalie Drew Holland of the Stanford men’s water polo team was named MPSF/KAP 7 Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
It is Holland’s first weekly conference honor and the first of the season for the Cardinal.
Holland anchored an exemplary defensive performance by the fourth-ranked Cardinal Saturday as it defeated No. 2 UCLA 8-6 at Avery Aquatic Center. The Orinda native and Miramonte High School graduate made 11 saves and marshaled a defense that held the Bruins to 0-for-11 on 6-on-5 opportunities.
UCLA’s total of six goals was its lowest output of 2013. The Bruins had entered the game averaging 16.47 goals a game, second-best in the MPSF.
Holland and the Cardinal (12-4, 1-1 MPSF) resume MPSF play Sunday, Oct. 27 at 12 p.m. against No. 9 Pepperdine.
