Stanford men’s water polo went on a 12-goal run to open up Sunday’s contest against UC Davis en route to a 19-5 win at Avery Aquatic Center.
Alex Bowen led the fourth-ranked Cardinal (12-4) with five goals in the win, scoring four of those in the team’s five-goal second period. Bret Bonanni scored four times, Griffin Bolan and Forrest Watkins each had hat tricks, Adam Abdulhamid scored twice while Reid Chase and Paul Rudolph added a goal apiece.
Scott Platshon started in goal for the Cardinal, going the distance and making seven saves.
Fourth-ranked Stanford returns to action next Sunday, Oct. 27, hosting Pepperdine in MPSF action at Avery Aquatic Center.
UC Davis falls to 7-10 on the year with the loss.
Stanford essentially put the game away with seven goals in the first period on the way to a 12-0 game-opening run. Watkins started the assault with just 49 seconds elapsed, grabbing and threw home in one motion for the opener. That goal was followed just 37 seconds later with Bowen’s first, and Bret Bonanni scored at the 5:52 and 5:20 marks to make it 4-0. Watkins added a goal at 4:13 to up the lead to 5-0, and the period concluded with Abdulhamid and Rudolph finding the net to complete the seven-goal barrage.
Bowen scored the first four goals of the second period for the Cardinal and with a minute left in the half Abdulhamid upped the lead to 12-0. UC Davis would finally break the shutout early in the third period as Chris Richardson lobbed home from deep, getting it over the outstretched fingertips of Platshon.
Bonanni would answer Richardson with a pair of goals and Reid Chase would add one on the power play to make it 15-1 before Trevor Allen tallied a second for the Aggies.
Each team would score twice in the fourth period to provide the final score line.
