STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's water polo's 2013 schedule, released Thursday by head coach John Vargas, will feature six home matches including two that will be broadcast live by the Pac-12 Network.
"We are looking forward to facing another challenging schedule this season. It will be very exciting to be able to showcase our great program as well as Avery Aquatic Center, the top facility in the country, on the Pac-12 Network on multiple occasions in 2013," said Vargas.
The Cardinal's first appearance on the network in 2013 will take place Oct. 19 against UCLA, with the second appearance being the Big Splash against California Nov. 23. Game times will be announced between 6-12 days prior to each contest as both matchups serve as part of a doubleheader with Stanford football.
Additionally, the National Collegiate Championship will return to Avery Aquatic Center for the first time since 2009 as Stanford will play host to the event Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 8-9.
Stanford, which finished 16-7 overall and 5-3 in MPSF play in 2012, finished the season ranked fourth in the nation. The Cardinal had four players earn All-America honors, with freshman Bret Bonanni (team-leading 73 goals in 2012) and sophomore Alex Bowen (64 goals) being named to the first team, and junior Forrest Watkins (22 goals, anchored Cardinal defense at two-meters which allowed just 7.78 goals per game) and freshman BJ Churnside (31 goals) named honorable mention.
The new campaign opens for the Cardinal in Rhode Island the weekend of Sept. 7-8, as the team participates in the Brown Invitational. Two weeks later, the Cardinal stays local, traveling to Berkeley for the NorCal Invitational, where Stanford took third last season.
Following its MPSF opener at Pacific Sept. 29, Stanford opens its home slate at Avery Saturday, Oct. 5 at 12 p.m. against South Bay neighbor Santa Clara. A week later, the Cardinal travels to Irvine for the SoCal Tournament Oct. 12-13.
UCLA comes to town for a televised matchup Oct. 19, leading off a four-game homestand for the Cardinal which also includes meetings with UC Davis (Oct. 20), Pepperdine (Oct. 27) and UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 3). Stanford then goes on the road for its next four, visiting UC Irvine (Nov. 8), Chapman (Nov. 9) and Long Beach State (Nov. 10) over a single weekend before returning south for a much-anticipated clash at USC Nov. 16.
The regular season comes to a close Nov. 23 as Stanford hosts California in the Big Splash on the Pac-12 Network. The 2013 MPSF Championship, hosted by Pacific, takes place Nov. 29-Dec. 1 with the National Collegiate Championship taking place the following weekend.
