Release: 05/06/2014

Stanford men's soccer head coach Jeremy Gunn announced a pair of moves on his staff, with former volunteer assistant Nick Kirchhof being promoted to assistant coach and Ben Graham coming to The Farm to begin his role as volunteer assistant coach.

Kirchhof and Graham join Gunn and top assistant John Smith to make up the Cardinal staff for the 2014 season.

"As the head coach I am thrilled with the coaching staff we have assembled. John, Nick, Ben, and Jason Quan, our sports performance coach, are all incredible people who truly add to the fabric of our program," Gunn said. "Each coach adds their own expertise to the group, while also helping to form a very positive, happy, high-performing environment here at Stanford.

The 2014 season will be Kirchhof's first as a full-time assistant coach after spending the previous two seasons as the program's volunteer assistant. His work on the training ground with the Cardinal players has helped the program go 19-15-5 over the past two seasons, and last year reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009. The Cardinal advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament as well, eventually falling 1-0 at Washington.

Kirchhof came to The Farm in 2012 after two seasons as the director of operations for the men's soccer program at Denver, and prior to that spent 2008-10 as an assistant coach at Colorado Mesa University.

"We are thrilled to promote Nick as an assistant coach. He has contributed massively to our success over the past two years and will no doubt continue to do so," Gunn said. "I had the great pleasure of coaching Nick when he was a standout collegiate player, and since then he has matured into an outstanding coach. Nick has a great rapport with the student-athletes and adds valuable insight to our staff."

Graham will serve as the Cardinal's goalkeeper coach in addition to assisting with scouting and recruiting duties. He spent the 2012-13 seasons on the staff at Northeastern after three seasons at Marymount College, Palos Verdes, where he served as head coach of both the men's and women's soccer teams.

At Northeastern, Graham helped lead the Huskies to their first CAA championship in 2012, an appearance in the NCAA tournament for the first time in a decade and the program’s first NSCAA national ranking. As the goalkeeper coach for Northeastern, he also coached senior goalkeeper Oliver Blum to the fifth-lowest goals against average (0.56) in the NCAA in 2012.

"We welcome Ben as our new volunteer coach. He has tremendous expertise working with goalkeepers, helping Northeastern University to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in ten years," Gunn noted." Ben will work primarily with the goalkeepers, but will also assist with many other facets of the program. Ben's energy and personality will be an excellent addition to our program."

Stanford is closing out its 2014 spring season this Saturday at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium against Sacramento Republic FC at 5 p.m.
