CHICAGO – Stanford rising sophomore Jordan Morris is among 18 players named to the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team roster for its upcoming five-day camp from Aug. 3-7 in Nassau, Bahamas. The camp will also feature a game against the Bahamas Senior National Team on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the Thompson A. Robinson National Stadium.

This camp is part of the USA’s continuing effort to focus early on the qualification process for the 2016 Summer Olympics taking place in Rio de Janeiro.

Morris is one of just two current collegiate players to make the team, alongside Maryland goalkeeper Zack Steffen. He has previous experience with the U.S. team, having earned three caps with the U-20 team at the Toulon Tournament in France.

“We are very excited for Jordan,” said head coach Jeremy Gunn, the 2011 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. “It is a great honor for him and another rung up the international ladder. He has had a tremendous year, always continuing to grow, and taking each opportunity in his stride. He has a terrific temperament to accompany his playing ability, and so we know he can blossom on that stage.”

“The chance to get this group of players together and get ahead of the curve in preparation for Olympic Qualifying in two years’ time is huge,” said U.S. Soccer Technical Director Jurgen Klinsmann. “We began with the U-21 camp in April, and now it’s critical that we have as many camps and games as possible so we can build a deep pool of talent that can qualify for Brazil. The Olympics are an important opportunity for young players, and we have to capitalize on it. We also want to give a big thanks the Bahamas Football Association for hosting us.”

Morris lived up to his top billing as a freshman last season, earning All-Pac-12 first team honors as well as Top Drawer Soccer’s Freshman Top XI team. He also garnered NSCAA All-Far West Region third team accolades.

The Mercer Island, Wash. native led all Pac-12 freshmen in assists (seven) and points (19) while finishing second with six goals. His six goals and 19 points were also second on the Cardinal while his seven assists paced the squad.

Morris helped Stanford to a 10-7-4 overall record in 2013 and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009. Stanford reached the Round of 16 before falling to No. 2 seed Washington, 1-0.

After a pair of home exhibitions against Cal State Bakersfield (Aug. 19) and Saint Mary’s (Aug. 23), Stanford opens its 2014 campaign on the Great Plains, traveling to Omaha for weekend matches at Creighton (Aug. 29) and Nebraska-Omaha (Aug. 31).

The Cardinal returns home, where it will remain for the entire month of September beginning with its home opener at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium Saturday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. against San Jose State. Three days later the Cardinal welcomes UC Santa Barbara to Cagan Stadium for the first of its 10 scheduled matches on the Pac-12 Network, kicking off against the Gauchos at 7 p.m.

The month continues with the Stanford/Cal Tournament weekend of Sept. 19 and 21, in which the Cardinal will host SIU Edwardsville and Delaware, respectively, with Sunday’s match with the Blue Hens set for a 1 p.m. kickoff on the Pac-12 Network. Friday’s contest against SIU Edwardsville will kick off at 5 p.m. as the start of a doubleheader with the Stanford women’s soccer team. September, and the program’s five-match homestand, comes to a close Friday, Sept. 26 with a 7 p.m. contest against Gonzaga.

October brings with it not only the onset of fall but also Pac-12 play, in which the Cardinal went 3-5-2 in 2013. This year’s conference schedule opens with Stanford making the annual trip to the Pacific Northwest to face Oregon State and Washington, with Sunday’s meeting with the Huskies set for 5 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.

That contest in Seattle marks the first of eight Pac-12 Network-televised conference matches for Stanford, as well as beginning a short run of four in a row which continues with a three-game homestand at Cagan Stadium against San Diego State (Oct. 9, 6 p.m.), UCLA (Oct. 12, 5 p.m.), and California (Oct. 20, 7 p.m.).

A three-game trip opens for the Cardinal with a non-conference match at San Francisco on Oct. 24, and continues with the conference trip to Southern California for a televised bout at UCLA (Oct. 30, 8 p.m.) followed by the weekend finale at San Diego State (Nov. 2, 1 p.m.).

The Cardinal ends the regular-season with three straight TV matches, hosting Washington on Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. and Oregon State on Nov. 9 at 3 p.m., then traveling to Berkeley for the finale on Nov. 16 at 1 p.m.

Stanford will aim for its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2014 when the postseason begins with first-round play on Thursday, Nov. 21. The 2014 College Cup is set for Dec. 12 and 14 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
